URGENT-adopting 2 littermates??

Hello ALL! I need some urgent advice!!

I have paid for two pugs from the same litter, male and female. I have read two books regarding pugs and they have never stated not to get two pugs from the same litter! After searching on this site and finding out it is not a good idea at all, I am heartbroken. For one, I have already paid and I don't think I could get my money back, since he took numerous phone calls while I was there looking and told them they were sold, because I told him I wanted them both.

There is also another clencher-they are only 6 weeks old -only 2 were born to the mother. The breeder stated that the mother was not feeding them because they were biting her and she'd leave. So he had to start feeding them dog food so they could eat.

I guess, I am just asking since I know they really are too young to bring home-IF the mother was there with them, I would have him keep them there with her until about 8 weeks or so, but she isn't-they have already been away from her for about a week. I guess I just don't know what to do and thought I had done my research, apparently not good enough!

I am suppose to bring them home today-what do you think??? THANKS for your help in this timely manner!

Call him and make it clear you don't want both puppies and want a full refund. They're a popular breed, he was getting calls, so he might not fight you on that. If he does, fight back. Tell him you've learned it's a bad idea to buy littermates, and tell him you're curious why he never mentioned that. Tell him you're also curious why he'd sell 6-week-old puppies and allow you to take them home, as that's against the law (check this out beforehand, but I'm reasonably certain it's illegal to buy and sell puppies under 8 weeks, in terms of the buyer taking them home) He's breaking the law and he's shortchanging the health of the puppies for his own convenience. Puppies are left with the mother until 8 weeks for reasons besides their nursing. They also learn a lot about appropriate behavior with other dogs and with humans from interacting with their littermates and their mother. It's a critical socialization period. No matter what you do with the issue of 2 puppies, you should insist he keep the puppies until they're 8 weeks old.

This guy's a weasel. I would also insist on getting a clean bill of health from a vet before 1) you take them home and 2) before you agree to keep them.

In short--don't take them home today. If he gives you trouble or threatens to keep your money and sell the puppies to someone who'll take them home today, tell him you'll a) sue him and b) contact the authorities about his dealing 6-week-old pups.

I can only tell you from my own experience - don't take them home yet if you can get out of it. Then again, maybe the pups will be in danger if you leave them there. I don't know. But, here's my story. I bought my puppy from a BYB because I didn't know any better and didn't find this great forum until after I got him home and started having some problems. The BYB let me take him at 6 weeks and I had a really hard time because he hadn't learned appropriate puppy behavior from his Mom and littermates. It was tough for me even though I was home all the time with him - he was crazy!! I had to do all the work that should have been done thoses last two weeks with the breeder. I don't know anything about buying littermates but I have had experience with bringing home a too young pup. Also, here in NJ, my vet told me it is illegal to let them go that young.

My puppy is doing great now with a lot of work and patience (and help from people here), but, had I been a different person, he may have ended up in a shelter because it was just so hard.

No reputable breeder would take the pups from their littermates before 8 weeks. It is natural for the mother to wean the pups before that time. This is not some oddity, as this breeder is expressing. They still need to stay with the litter mates a couple of weeks longer, regardless of whether the mother has any further influence on the pups. The pups learn social lessons from each other. No reputable breeder would send two puppies from one litter home with anyone. That is just not wise and does not give the pups the best chance. If she has people who were on a waiting list and were turned away, she may be able to recall them if you cancel on one or both puppies. Disreuptable breeders, however cannot be trusted. Are there any genetic health tests and results for you to see? I'd be leery of taking any of them, but if you do, just take one. You'll have an easier time with one and when that one is a couple of years old, then think about adding another. Best wishes. Let us know how it all turns out.

You already know the answer. DO NOT TAKE HOME THOSE PUPPIES.

I know you want them, but there will always be more puppies. The breeder definitely sounds shady as well, another red flag.
