I wanted to post an update to a previous post I'd made a few days ago on the little 3 yr old girl selling watercolor paintings on ebay, to pay for vet bills for their family dog seriously hurt in a dog attack... but unless I'm blind... I don't see my post about this, and it must have been removed. :( I know there was at least one person here that was concerned and posted, I guess I'll post the update from the owner of this dog, so that anyone following and wondering will know how Duncan is doing. The 2,400+ people on the blind dog list I help on has given overwhelming support, prayers and donations to this family (and there were photos of this poor dog posted on the ebay listing... that seem to be gone now... so I won't post it again)... or anything to do with money. I'll just post the update, and ask for prayers for this family, and their sweet hero, Duncan.

~~~~~Letter to the blinddogs list ~~~~~~
Hello everyone. I am the father of the little girl raising money for
Duncan to help offset the vet costs. I am proud of her for wanting
to do this and she is only 3. I cant thank everyone enough for the
well wishes and prayers and donations we have received. Just a
little background on Duncan. He stepped in front of our daughter on
that dreadful day and became the prime target instead of my
daughter. He was out-sized 3 to 1 against this other dog, but that
didnt matter. His neck was torn apart and severly cut, his fur and
skin was torn off all the way back and it looked like he had been
scalped. It was hanging off and dragging from the back of his body.
His back leg was so severly bitten through and mangled that the
doctors thought there was no way to save it. He had severe bruising
and swelling around the groin area from being jerked back and forth.
On the day May 3 I was at work and received a phone call from my
hysterical wife and I raced home not knowing what was happening. My
daughter witnessed the whole horrific nightmare, my wife's finger was
bitten through trying to pry the other dog off (another doctor
bill). I came through the door and couldnt ever explain the
nightmare I stepped into. I picked up Duncan wrapped him in
blankets, got my family into the car and sped off to the vet. Not
knowing whether or not he was going to make it, we never once thought
about it and told the vets to do whatever. We knew we didnt have
money to do this and we knew the bills were going to mount up. But
Duncan is not only a hero to my daughter and my family, he is also
like another one of our children. All in all, Duncan received 320
stitches and staples ($5.19 each to put in) and lo and behold He just
the other day had them all taken out ($3.00 each) His skin has re-
attached and his wounds are healing. His swelling is down, but his
immune system is weak and he just contracted Bronchitis and is on
antibiotics. He was in a state of shock for 3 days. He has received
numerous x-rays, hydrotherapy, surgery, syringe feedings, bloodwork,
baytril injections, sedations, etc. Bills have mounted and we never
once questioned it. We started running out of groceries and decided
to start selling whatever we could get our hands on in our house.
Being an avid golfer I even sold those :0(. So to make this story
shorter, Isabella decide she wanted to draw pictures of Duncan and
sell them like her mommy and daddy have been doing. She loves to
draw and that is how the idea came to be. I cant thank everyone
enough for their support!! I will keep everyone updated with more
details. God Bless everyone and their dogs and may Duncan be back on
his feet chasing frisbees one day soon.
Thank you for posting an update. Unfortunately I never saw your first post. Duncan is a true hero and he deserves to live. I admire that family so much. I am definately going to buy some of Isabella's pictures. Anything to help this wonderful family.
What an emotional story this was to read. I just went on ebay and saw she will paint up to 500 paintings to sell. I put my bid in for some. Isabella and Duncan deserve to have a long happy life together.
What a sweet little girl's heart. And her parents! I think they should get a website up to let her sell her "commissioned" art! Like, I would love to send $25 and get one of her cute paintings back from her instead of the eBay auction-type thing. We could help "shop" the website around and I bet she'd make more money. What do you think?
It was posted on Dog Sites & Pet Sites. I've updated your posting since the painting auction has been extended to June 12th. Here's the website:
Barb,
Thanks for reposting the link about Duncan. If anyone wants to verify the story, or make a donation directly to the vet, I'm adding the address & phone number of Duncan's vet office.
Dog's Name is "Duncan" Account is under Gonzalez
Alamo Heights Pet Clinic
6488 N New Braunfels Ave
San Antonio, TX 78209-3827
(210) 821-5544
The owner of www.handicappedpets.com is a wonderful man, and works closely with a lot of the rescue folks to sponsor adoption events, etc. I know he is working with the Gonzalez family to help Duncan with any special needs.
Update on Duncan from his family :)
*** For those following Duncan's recovery... this was posted by his family to the blind dogs owner list I'm on***
Well, first off let me say sorry to everyone for being so far behind
in updates. I have been so busy with work and trying to get extra
hours in that I have not had a breathing minute. Also, I would like
to thank everyone for the act of kindness in your donations. WE have
been overwhelmed from the generous outpouring of emails and prayers
and donations. From as far away as the United Kingdom to as close as
Austin, Tx. Thank you everyone!! I wish I had more time to respond
to each and everyone's emails. I will catch up though. Please be
patient. Thank you especially Lynda!! You made our day!!!!! Well,
Duncan is doing much better. Stitches and Staples are out, fur is
growing over the scars and he has more energy. Too much in fact that
it really gets him very tired, very quickly. His swelling is down in
the back leg, but is still black and blue in the groin area. His
bronchitis is still there and he is taking medication twice a day.
He is still on soft foods (three broken teeth) that will be fixed
soon. He has finished hydrotherapy. All tubes were removed. He is
very shy around our other 2 dogs though and the transition to having
them together is being very tough. He once was outgoing and loving
to them and now is afraid of any dog bigger than he. His bladder
empties very unexpectedly. All in all though he is a tough cookie.
Our son is strong and getting the attention he needs from the vet
thanks to everyone. My daughter's name is Isabella. She is 3 and
wants to be a doggy doctor when she grows up. :0) She is drawing
pictures like crazy. Yes, I was saddened to have my golf clubs gone,
I have been going through withdrawals, but was never any good
anyways. I wish I could thank everyone in person and Isabella and my
wife send out hugs to everyone ()!! More updates to follow!! Thank
you again. Please stay in touch everyone. I will try to be quicker
in responses.
Armando, Amanda and Isabella Skye Gonzalez. And of course Duncan!!!
Karen, if you think it's okay, I respect your judgment.
And anyway, I'd rather be taken in once in awhile than become cynical and hard-hearted.
Hi Renee,
I do know that the story is true... and that this family is very grateful for the help given to help Duncan survive. The family has been posting updates to those that have helped on the blind dog list, and more often than I've had a chance to keep up with them to pass along! I'm posting the last one from today for those keeping up on Duncan :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just wanted to update everyone on Duncan. His ears seem to be getting
better. Drops dont bother him as much anymore. He isnt eating much
and only will eat when we sit with him and hand feed him? This just
started about a few days ago. We have slowly started to re-introduce
him to his fellow companions, but I admit it is really nerve wracking.
It seems our other dogs do not recognize him with the shaved hair and
wounds. Or maybe the smell of open wounds drives them wild? Whatever
it is, we are taking it one step at a time. As for an Isabella
update. Everyone that purchased pictures, we thank you again. Now,
getting a three year old to make more than 3 or 4 pictures at a time is
a little hard. We apologize for the long waits some of you have
endured. We have not forgotten anyone. It may just take a little
longer. Also, we are having trouble finding something large enough to
put pictures in without having to fold the drawing. Oops, we never
thought about that part. Well...again I apologize for not being up to
date with everything. I have also taken on 14 hour days at work to
catch up on time missed, etc. So computer time is down to almost nil.
Sorry it takes a day to catch up on emails. Duncan is scheduled for
some bloodwork on Wed. We'll keep you updated.

One thing that bugs me about the whole story.

5.19$ per stich and 3.00 per stich to take em out. Someone's BSing either a Vet or the Owner.

I have some experience with vets and stitches and its FAR from that expensive, and ALL vets I knew, the taking out part was 100% free because it was post op.

My suggestion is to find a vet who isnt out for money, obviously the current one is.

I was also wondering what happened to the attacker dog and its owner?

Why cant they be held liable? Was it a stray?

Holding someone liable and actually collecting are two entirely different things - and even when collecting is possible it can take years . . .

Some vets are learning to charge like MDs . . . which is sad.

That is such a sad story. It reminds me of when I was attacked by a dog. I shiver just thinking of it. It's really nice to hear the dog (and the family) is recovering. I'm sure they"ll go through it! Thanks for the updates JRT Rattie Mom, keep them coming.

I live in San Antonio and wrote our local newspaper to see if they have heard this story. Also, I plan to drive by the vet clinic. Sorry, I am also a skeptic....
