My friend just went and paid for a puppy that is claimed to be 50% Husky, 50% Timber Wolf.

The dog, for one thing, is just a small black spitz looking mix.
For another thing, she keeps gloating about its supposed wolf content.

I asked her how they proved the dog is 50% timber wolf. I can't wait to hear the reply to that one.

When I was in high school my baby brother was attacked and almost killed by a wolf/husky hibred. His lungs were punctured, his throat nearly ripped out and he was drug by his scalp 30 feet. He was flown to a near by children's hospital in Atlanta where he spent the next few months. I'm sorry to be so negative but you should let your friend this breed needs to be watched, trained and kept close. the dog was on a leash with his owner when this happened. Please, please be careful with this dog

Ugh. Guaranteed sign you're dealing with an idiot. It almost definitely is not part wolf, but if it is, I agree with MyLilly1. Major accident waiting to happen, especially since the vast majority of people who get these hybrids are morons who shouldn't even own a dog at all.

This.

With rare rare rare exception.. people just aren't equipped to deal with these animals.
I do hope the dog is just an over-priced mix of a few breeds and not a wolf hybrid because I do agree.. otherwise, it's an accident waiting to happen.

She is refusing to even acknowledge my question to her.

She bought it as a playmate for her Sibe. I REALLY hope she doesn't plan on breeding these dogs, but she is just dumb enough to try.

I wish I didn't feel compelled to tell people the truth about these types of scams. I don't know why I do it, I know it's often hopeless, but I'm so passionate about the issues that I just can't keep my mouth shut a lot of the time.

I need a muzzle.

Her response: They had the dad on the premises and he looked just like a wolf. They gave me registration papers too.

Uh, what? Registration papers for what? Did they give you a piece of legal pad that says "this puppy is half wolf, you can trust us"? What registry would that even be with?
She's already being snarky.

Oooooooh. Registration papers. Well that shows you. Lol.

So the Malamute mix sire looks like a wolf. And where did the "breeders" get this so called "wolf?" Sigh.

She said her husband had a wolfdog growing up and said they're the perfect pet. And asked me to please message her my concerns.

I did. I explained everything. I truly hope she listens.

Yeah, I mentioned to her the scam of taking a nordic breed with wolf-like markings/colouring and saying it has high wolf content, or is in fact pure wolf. I also explained the fact that having a Timberwolf, in South Carolina, is extremely unlikely.

You should tell her that her liability could be different. IE if you have a known wolf cross and it bites someone, typically you get in more hot water than if its just a dog. Some home insurance policies won't cover you with a wolf cross.

It might be in her best interest if she can have it tested to see if it is or isn't part wolf. You might also want to tell her that she will have to be hypervigilant as in the vast majority of cases these don't make good pets as they are not good with strangers no matter how much socializing you do.

^This. And in some states it is illegal to own a wolf hybrid.

I'm skeptical about the '23% red wolf' claim. The sites I've seen basically say that people claiming their wolf-dogs are part red wolf are BSing, since red wolves are so endangered.

I just told her about the liability issues. Luckily she is being very open to this, which is nice. I usually get my head chewed off by my friends for their stupid decisions on pets.

Also, there is no pure wolf on that website. They clearly lied to her.
