Last night I let Princess outside to run, put her food dish out on the back step for her. When I went to let her in, her dish was still there, same place, food had been eatten but the bottom of the dish had mud stuck to it, mud clumps in the dish and on the side. It was obvious she didnt eat her food in that spot. So this morning its warm out again, I let her out to play in the yard for a couple of hours. I then got her food dish and put out for her, she was already out running in back. From there I go back to get her water dish. By the time I got back outside, she had already taken her food dish. There she was out running around the yard with her food dish in her mouth, even stops to potty with the dish in her mouth. The funny thing is she always puts her dish back where I first put it, most of the time empty. I dont think she has figured out I know what she's doing.
In the house she now carries it from room to room with her, only when it has food in it. Always ends up in our bedroom. Now I wonder if it is kind of like her trying to guard her food from our newly adopted cat! She has always eatten her food in the kitchen. Its only been since we took this cat in that she takes her food dish to other rooms. She is not at all food aggressive. In fact when the cat checks out this dish of dog food, Princess just sits there and watches, waits until the cat leaves then takes her dish and leaves with it. We've been thinking about getting a dish she cant carry around but I kind of hate to. She must have a reason she takes her food dish places. Most of the time she's very neat about it (except the other day I found food on my bed, on the dinning room floor, on the familyroom floor, on the sofa). All the other times you could never tell she travels with the dish.
Do you think this behaviour could be a form of guarding her food? I have just never had a dog go to this extreme, its actually quite entertaining to watch.

I applaud your decision not to try to thwart her with an immovable dish. Why spoil the fun? And it would only frustrate her and possible make her feel that she's got to take more aggressive measures to protect her dish.

It does sound like she's being possessive of the dish, not necessarily the food. So funny!

I can't even begin to tell you what all my dogs did to their dishes...they became such the big toy to them! I bet she is just travelling around to a place all her own. Not to say she has any issues with the new kitty.....just deciding where she'd like her dish to be.....to her liking. How funny!! I also bet eventually she will allow you to put it where you'd like it to be. :D
