So, Zander's good until 2014 with his rabies vaccination. He has his tag from last year, and he's technically due to get this year's tag around now.

But, I've lost a copy of his rabies cert. And I figure if I take him to a vet that doesn't have his records, then they'll make me re-vaccinate, right? Which, I guess isn't usually a huge issue, but we are leaving for Italy in March. So he'll need it then to get cleared.

We're traveling to see family the beginning of August. We didn't run into any issues with anyone asking to see his rabies cert on the way up here in January. No hotels or anything. But we had it on hand at that point. Now we don't. Murphy's Law, you know.

I don't want to vaccinate for rabies twice within a year. Especially for a "just in case" we get stopped and someone asks for it. But he IS technically clear and does have his rabies tag.

And, if we don't get stopped, I can take him to his old vet down there and get a new tag no problem because they have his records down there. No biggie. It's just that...what if someone asks on the way down.

So, what would you guys do?

Can't you just go to the old vet and get them to reprint it? I'm always losing the certificates and having the vet reprint it for me LOL

Old vet is in Mississippi, I'm in Montana. Mail wouldn't even reach us before we left. Thus what makes this problem so confusing. Lol. Technically I CAN go to the old vet. I just have to make the trip down there first. But it's the trip I'm worried about.

Who would ask for a rabies cert while we were en route within the country?

(Holy crap I didn't realize we're over halfway through July!!!! lol)

I'd call them and explain anyways, they may be nice and mail it express or priority or whatever, or you may have to pay them back... I'm sure you can work something out that can give you peace of mind :) They must have dealt with similar situations.

Failing that I'd just go and hope no one gives you any trouble about it lol

Or have them scan it and email it to you, and you print it.

A rabies tag is NOT actually legal proof of a rabies vaccine.. you MUST have the certificate. So, if you're after having legal proof on you that your dog is vaccinated.. I'd get in touch with your vet about getting a copy of the cert to you :)

I would have them email it to you :) my vet did so and what's great about that is that I saved the attachment on my phone so that I always have rabies cert on hand now

A vet can't "make" you do anything. But they can't issue you a rabies certificate, either - legally only the veterinarian who gave the rabies vaccine can do that.

Others have covered it - contact them and ask them to fax or email you a copy.

Yep, ditto everybody else; if you've switched vets it's always a good idea to ask your old vet to send over your old records to the new vet anyway.

My kids don't wear their tags, as it's not considered proof. Only time I pull out my rabies cert though is to cross the border into the US.

Thanks for all the answers! Hopefully they'll give me the rabies cert. It's under my mother's name, but it's the same dog. I don't think it would cause any issues, they know me too.

And saving it on the phone is actually a REALLY good idea. Quick and easy without having to dig through papers...plus, if I lose it, just print out another copy! Wicked awesome idea.

And if nothing else works, well, that is the way we are heading anyway so I can pick it up while we are there.

Thanks for the answers!
