Tibetan Spaniel?

What first sparks my interest is that they're cute.. LOL

But seriously I do want to know more about these guys. I've always liked pomeranians and papillons but never entertained the idea of owning any other small dog breed. What I gather is that they are less velcro than other toy's (?). The bonus is is that they are on the larger spectrum compared to a pom who is 4-7 pounds. Lol.


Another bonus, besides them being awesome watch dogs is that I read that they are not yappy (meaning - don't just bark just because.). I'm looking at small dogs because I can forsee more basement suites/apartments in my near future. Although I would really love to have a toller.

Anyways, any information you can provide that would be great.

My grandma has a 5mth old Tibbie (Aura is her name). I really like her! She's so much fun. She is very willful and very much "what's in it for me?", but she also loves to learn and acts very proud of herself when she does something right, haha. Definitely not a breed for someone without a lot of dog experience. She's about 98% housebroken already. She was completely, but then my grandma had a not-so-bright moment and decided to leave her loose in the house while she went to work a few weeks ago... and Aura of course decided that she could do whatever she wanted, and set back her house-breaking a bit due to too much freedom for a couple of weeks. She's not vocal in the slightest... but due to her squished face she does snuffle a bit. Just a little bit -- not like a Pug. Grooming is super simple too. All Aura really needs is a quick comb through once a week or so, and I trim her paws and ears once a month. They're supposedly not overly energetic dogs as adults, but Aura is very active. She plays non-stop with the Doberman she lives with, and my Grandma takes her for about a 40min walk in the evenings. She's also an incredibly confident little dog. I'm not sure if that's a breed trait, or just the way she is, but nothing bothers her whatsoever. If I were to ever want something smaller than a Toller, I'd seriously consider a Tibbie.

She got her from a place called Partitime in Kelowna, BC. They're super nice, very knowledgeable about the breed, and the dogs are completely health tested and were shown in AKC to their Ch. There's not enough competition here generally to get a CKC Ch. she said. She breeds very limitedly too. The one and only problem with them is the health guarantee, which isn't as long as it should be IMO. There was another breeder in Ontario that I'd contacted too, as I'd heard lots of great things about them, but they never got back to me for some reason.

Oh, and that also reminds me that they're supposed to be a very healthy breed in general. All the research I did on them only ever mentioned a few, and most were very minor/non-life threatening.

ETA: I still think you should just get a Toller... a smaller female would suit your needs just fine, I think!

Yeah I don't think I've seen any at the few shows I've been to. I've seen two out on walks. Definitely not a common breed.. which, isn't really a bad thing.

It seems that PRA is the biggest concern in them.

And yeah I do think a toller would, but I was just thinking size wise.. but I do suppose if the dog gets out enough maybe a smaller space wouldn't be so bad? Either way still lots of time to mull it over. I was thinking in a year to a year and half.

They are super cute, lol! They are my second favorite of the toy spaniels and my favorite toys after paps and cresties. They're cool little dogs. The ones I know (we know quite a few from showing) are really really calm dogs especially when compared to the paps and even the poms. They're sweet but they seem to have less of a hyper 'omg people!' reaction than the paps. They're not very barky and from my time with them are playful and generally just good natured dogs. They do seem to be a little stubborn, but overall they seem like easy going little dogs with good temperaments. I've always liked the ones I've met but I just don't know if I'll ever have a different toy breed.

I adore them and I agree, they may be the cutest breed ever. (Don't tell my dogs I said that!)
