I'd say males , but even though I'M a femle, becasue they look better to me, they are loyal and just got that whole male muscale thing going on...its hard to put in words. But females are nice to don't get me wrong, but males r better.LOL

Hmmm. . . had males and females. The males are definitely less quirky and easier to train and more fun-loving. The females have been more intense and more likely to be serious about a situation with another dog. Where one of the males might take umbrage at something another dog did and correct it, afterward everything is forgiven; the females don't forgive and forget so easily!

As far as Terriers and German Shepherds go, having had the combination a couple of times, and knowing my sister's situation with a German Shepherd and a Jack Russell, they do make a great combo! Jacks seem to have the same type of learning curve as a German Shepherd for the most part, and Terriers tend to be playful their whole lives.

I have tried to train a male dachshund....his brain was in outerspace and I couldn't teach him anything. I train his little friend, a female westie, once a week, and while she can be a stubborn little brat, she's intelligent.

hey renee, when we had jack russels (one with a male gsd and a female golden, the other jrt was with a male gsd and a female gsd), we didnt have any trouble. jrt's are tough enough that only the bravest/stupidest dog would mess with them. the male gsd would push his food bowl over to the jrt and then sit and let her eat it. and as much as I loved those 2 jrt's and still do, they are a handfull. they just have to chew and dig and bounce all the time. and they constantly have to kill something, even if its just a tennis ball or squeeky toy. jrt is up there on my list with golden and cattle dog, I just dont know if its right for my wife. on on ehand I do think so because they are possibly the cutest little monsters ever, they cuddle, their smart, their small (her criteria), etc. but they also arent up there because they are so intense. I would love to have one or 2 jrts running around again, and will someday. just cant decide if it would be right for her.

I agree that Jacks are pretty intense....most terriers are....Colby often gets real bad cases of the zoomies...and if she's off-leash and sees a rabbit?...she's gone in .2 seconds.

Well my aunt has a Rat Terrier and she is so hyper, but I use to know someone who had a JRT and he was so sweet and "somewhat" calm. I think JRT are cute and they might be good for your wife, but I still say a Cattle DOg...oh stirder did u call that person about the cattle dogs?

havnt called yet. been busy with dogs this morning. it will probably be a while before we get one. and in that time we are going to check out rescues and breeders. may end up with a mix of golden, aussie, and jrt, you never know. being trusted off leash would be preferable, but most of the time we dont risk it. almost everywhere we go locally there are lots of people with totally untrained dogs off-leash, and most of the places we go to camp/hike require dogs to be on leash. it would just be an added plus. and believe me, a jrt is the last dog I would trust off leash. they dont have to see a rabbit, they just imagine one and chase it.
anyway, thanks so much for all the responses. pretty much confirmed my original selection. narrowed down to golden or aussie, somewhat possible would be JRT or doberman.

I wish I could risk a Jack around here, but they'd be coyote bait here.

My sister's GSD keeps Braec (the Jack) quite firmly in line, lol! Braec bit one of the kids - who richly deserved to be bitten, having been told time and time and time and time again to stop sniffing in the dog's ears  and now Obie (GSD) won't allow Braec to be alone with the kids. If Obie leaves the room she herds Braec out with her. Irritates him no end, but there's nothing he can do about it, lol!

You'll love this one then.

Buffy, our first Fila, had MASSIVE dignity. And held a grudge . . .

Someone in the trailer park next to us had a Jack Russell, and being a Jack Russell, he had to come check out the pasture next door and the dogs too. Of course, he lunged at Buffy, catching her off guard so that she started. Being a Fila, she didn't have any desire to hurt a small dog, so she just tried to avoid the Jack.

Charley thought it was funny and laughed at her and made fun of her - a mistake of biblical proportions! She couldn't abide being laughed at and she never forgave that Jack Russell for causing it, so she made his life much more interesting.

He loved to come over to the woods in the lower pasture and hunt with Bimmer, which was fine, as long as Buffy wasn't around. Embarrassing her, then getting caught in HER pasture was a terrible faux pas . . .

I was out in the pasture one day and I heard the unmistakeable thunder of Fila feet coming up behind me - FAST! I figured it was Bimmer and Buffy playing or chasing something, so I froze in place to avoid being trampled. When I turned to look, it was Buffy, all right, eyes gleaming with evil glee . . . that Jack Russell was about four inches in front of her, running for his life on those little short legs, feeling her hot breath on his butt . . .

There's not a doubt in my mind that she had no intention of actually hurting him, or that she could have caught him if she'd really wanted, but oh, I wish I had that on film! The expression on those two dogs' faces! That is the only time in my life I've ever seen fear on the face of a Terrier!

thats hilarious. I have one, actually two. our first jack russel was actually my brothers. first off, he was the youngest person in north america to ever get a falconers license, federal law says have to be 18, he was 15 1/2. his sponsor (guy that helped him learn everything and get the license) bred jack russels and used them to scare rabbits out of brush so the hawks could see them.
my brother was training his first hawk in our back yard, had told my mom and me to keep pepper (jack russel pup the size of a softball) inside. well, mom forgot and let her out. she made a beeline across the driveway, superman jumped over the retaining wall, as she landed so did the hawk. she was fine except for 1/4 right side of her tongue was now forked. we thought shed have to be put down, that she would never be able to drink again and it wouldnt heel. the slit was over 2 inches long. luckily it was so close to the edge of her tongue, vet said shed be fine. and in just 1-2 hours it went from arterial bleeding to no bleeding.
well, she never got to go chase rabbits when he went hunting with the hawk, because she wouldnt forgive the hawk, every bird she saw was a mortal enemy.

#2. since I was 7 or 8 we had horses. my mom grew up with them and dad always wanted to be roy rogers. well, I guess I was probably 17 or 18 when our prized mare gave birth to a buckskin colt we named cisco (like the cisco kid, and the horse in dances with wolves). from the second that colt touched ground, he had 2 mothers. the mare of course, and pepper the jack russel terrier. at the time we had 2 mares and an enourmous gelding. the gelding had to be seperated as they will often kill a foal. the other mare was in with the mother (or I should say mothers) and baby. for one thing, the mare that wasnt the mom couldnt get within 15 feet of the baby, or shed have a jack russel nose ring. if the gelding got within 5 feet of the fence he had a white and tan snarling blur after him. we have a video of the colt sleeping, laying down, and pepper curled up with her head reasting on his neck. and several videos of them running around playing.

Those are WONDERFUL Jack stories!

There's a big redtail who hunts the back pasture. He watches for Bimmer to come out, then finds a fencepost close by and perches and waits for Bimmer to flush a rabbit. They seem to have a professional courtesy agreement of sorts, as if the rabbit is in a position where Bimmer's got a shot at catching it the hawk ignores it. If Bimmer sees he can't catch the rabbit, he stops and lets the hawk strike.

I can't believe people like to shoot these beautiful birds . . . they do no harm at all, and are so important to keeping the vermin population down. If it weren't for the redtails, farmers would be overrun with rats and mice in the feed!

Now buzzards are another matter entirely! Bimmer doesn't allow them in his pasture, lol!

well, we are seriosuly considering this little girl. shes not a golden or a australian cattle dog...but a australian shepherd supposedly crossed with a nova scotia duck tolling retriever (personally I think golden is more likely, nove scotias are somewhat rare, but doesnt matter), she seems to be what we are looking for. contacted the shelter just now, some shelters dont adopt out of state and dont want to drive 2+ hours to meet her, fall in love, and then find out we cant adopt her.
will let you all know.

oops, forgot to post the link...I feel dumb right now.

Now that looks like one special dog! Having had a rescued Aussie, I can tell you they are smart, clever, loving, eager to please, want to be close to you . . . O'Reilly (after Radar from M.A.S.H., not Bill) was a lethal white puppy and drew the blindness card, but you couldn't ask for a more loyal and fearless dog. He was full of joie d'vivre until the end of his long life.

When Braec the Jack was staying with us, O'Reilly did an admirable job of keeping him in line. It drove Braec over the edge more than once when, after he'd tried to jump O'Reilly from his blind side, O'Reilly herded him into a corner and refused to let him out until he was quiet.

it depends on several factors, namely wether or not they will adopt out of state. I dont mean shipping, we of course want to meet the dog, take strider to meet the dog (whichever we end up getting), and bring it home ourselves. we have also contacted several other rescues, and breeders. and there are a couple of really cute ones at our 2 local shelters. http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?ac...4bf-app3&display=&preview=1&row=0&tmpl=&stat=

there are a couple of others, but Im not going to post all of them. we are going to go meet them and do temperment tests, and se how they get along with strider. like I said, we are not in any hurry. at the moment we dont have everything we would need for a second dog such as bowls, leashes, collars, crate, etc. and I knew I forgot to put one of my wifes top picks on the list at the very beginning...a schipperke. her brothers girlfiend has one and my wife absolutely adores it. I had heard of them but had never researched them more than casually glancing at the ads in the back of magazines like dogs usa (not with intention of buying, just looking at the pictures), untill I met this one named Nemo (as in captain nemo, not like the pixar fish movie, dog is older than finding nemo). deffinetly energetic and, whats the right work, plucky? enough to keep up and play with strider. smallish so fits her desire. calm when its not play time (from asking about nemo and reading about them, may just be some of them though), smart and trainable. good watchdog even though thats not in the criteria, we dont mind either way as strider makes the roof shake when someone comes towards the front door. and there is a breeder about 30-45 minutes away from my dad. that doesnt seem important, but we drive over to visit him pretty often so its handy. sorry I forgot to mention that one, we've been reading and talking about so many breeds I got confused and though she had ruled that one out in favor of the golden or aussie.
oh, I just went back and looked, I did list it in my first post, but then when I listed our top pics I didnt list it. too many breeds on my mind lately I think. well anyway, its between a schipperke, that female aussie x nova scotia, and a few breeders and rescues.
Im going to stop now before I get my tongue tied in a knot again.

luckily its not the first time Ive tried to pick a dog. so I know not to just go with the first cute face a see. I love them all, and so does my wife so I have to think carefully about each one, and make her do the same. I want to rescue them all but that wouldnt be fair to them.
