Thinking about a Mac?

I've had my macbook for about 6 months now and LOVE IT! I'll never go back to a PC.
When my desktop died, I decided to get a laptop to replace it. Matt had been talking about getting a Mac for a while, so I looked into it. I'm not one for change, and hated the idea of having to learn things all over again, and kept leaning towards getting a standard laptop with windows that I already knew how to operate. I'm so SO glad I went with the Mac. I've never looked back!
The transition was so much easier than I though it would be. I had no problems at all with it. And with all the Vista problems, I couldn't be happier to have a truly "user friendly" computer.

My dad spent over $2,000 on a Dell laptop . . . POS. He sat down and cruised around on my little G4 one evening and now he's terribly sorry he didn't listen to me (although to be fair, my mom told him if he didn't get a Dell he couldn't get a new computer, which he desperately needed, because a friend of her's son is a Dell techie . . . who doesn't know **** from applebutter - even I can't figure out WTF he's done on this machine, not that I'm an expert, but I can generally follow my nose through operations, been doing it since DOS days). He's been going by the Apple store in Knoxville doing some serious drooling. Even mom almost admits the Dell was a mistake, since she still can't figure out how to use it for her embroidery pattern downloads. But she likes my Mac. And thinks it's cuter

Oh, and that $2200 Dell? Not even remotely as fast as the little G4
dual 8800GT's in SLI, core 2 duo at 3.16 mHz stock, around a terabyte of hard drive space, 4 gigs of DDR3 ram... *drools*

Only reason macs don't get as many viruses as a windows system is because there's not as many mac users, so very few people bother to write viruses for them.
Once Macs start gaining more popularity you'll get more and more viruses written for the system.
And that $2000 system must not have been very good. Like necho said, you can get a ridiculously good system for $2000 that will blow any mac away. And with some basic maintenance keep it running smooth.

Personally I think macs are overrated and over priced. You can get a much better windows unit (or linux or what have you) for much cheaper and keep it running well with some basic maintenance every now and then. Worth the price difference.

But . . . one of the big reasons there aren't viruses out there eating Macs is because the Mac OS is a real OS and it's leaner and doesn't have all the sloppy vulnerabilities inherent in Windows. Windows isn't a real OS. It's a kluge band-aid over DOS so that it looks like a Mac and you can operate it by pretty pictures instead of having to learn dot commands.
Another reason Mac has a tighter system is because THEY put out challenges to find holes and vulnerabilities in the system.

No, it has vulnerabilities, maybe less than windows but they're certainly there. It's just, as I said, no one's going to bother writing a good virus for the mac when they can affect so many more people by writing one for windows.
Hence why you build your own. A lot cheaper, and not hard at all. It's just connecting cables together.

Exactly. Keep in mind macs only represent about 10% of all computers in the US; the rest are running windows (or Linux, but that's a very small portion percentage wise). If you wanted to make a name for yourself by causing the maximum amount of damage with a virus or what not, you'd make your virus target windows computers because there's a larger user base, and a MUCH larger corporate user base. Hitting business is preferable, as you can cause a lot of monetary damage, and if you make it bad enough it'll make the news and you'll gain some fame.
However, with the increase in the number of macs, more people are starting to target them as well. I'll give it about 5 years, and macs will be just as targeted as windows for viruses.
Granted, if you're smart and don't download random crap without knowing what it is, you shouldn't have a problem running windows. Besides, wouldn't you rather figure out how to use something that you spent a bunch of money on and become a more competent computer user, or spend a bunch more money on something that doesn't allow you to use the majority of useful programs written for computers?

And building your own computer is by far the way to go. I built my first one with no outside help in about an hour and a half; had it up and running after installing windows and my must-have programs in 3. A mac with comparable power would have cost me at least twice as much.
