you all know I live in the country...so, no..not alot of action around here. But...the mailman stops, the occasional car drives by, sometimes even a neighbor stops........then yes, the quick routine barking (not by Addie..she has never barked at a person in her life, only animals) No big deal. Now...laugh if you will, but this is getting to be a serious problem for me.....HEAVEN FORBID the UPS truck is in a 3 mile radius.....they both go completely bonkers!!! It is becoming like some stupid comedy....I hear the truck, ever so faintly....OMG I think to myself...before I can even react, it becomes a wild nightmare of barking, raving lunatic dogs. So, I immediately give the 'enough' command........this is the one time they don't even hear me........they are OBSESSED with than da*m truck!!! Yesterday Brown was making a delivery...but not to my house...and happened to have to go past........It got so wild, so quickly that Ham even lunged for the front room window totally scratching my little queen Anne tea table. :( Again...garbage truck can stop up on the road...nothing. I used to think Addie just got excited cause the UPS driver gave her a biscuit....and for some reason, Ham just doesn't like her (she has tried, but he doesn't like too many people).......but it's the mere SOUND of the truck. Do you know how far sound travels on a quiet day??? UPS delivery is a way of life around here...we don't have stores. What can I do?????? :( It's truly making me nuts!

makes you wonder what the ups man has in his truck? I wrote once about the drug dog that smelled the drugs in a gasoline tanker...wouldn't pull off even when the truck was checked out completely..they finally drained the gas and guess what they found!

I don't know what it is about the UPS trucks that turns otherwise reasonable dogs into slavering, barking maniacs. The only dog I've ever heard of that didn't go nuts was Charley's dog, Odd Job. Oddsie was a Rottie/Bull Mastiff mix - just a big, fierce looking sweetheart. He loved the UPS guy that delivered stuff to Charley's mom. He'd go out and meet the truck and play with the UPS man.

Charley took Odd Job to Florida with him when he moved to Treasure Island. The UPS truck pulled up next door to him one day, but he didn't think about Odd Job laying on the front porch. The UPS truck stayed there, and stayed there, and stayed there, and Charley got curious. Then he noticed it was rocking back and forth. So he walked over and looked in the truck.

The two UPS delivery men were clinging to the top shelves in the back of the van, yelling for help. Odd Job was jumping around in the truck, barking and yelping, utterly confused because his buddies wouldn't come out and play with him!

I have a good buddy who's a UPS man. His own dog won't have anything to do with him until he gets his 'browns' off. He's told me a few times that he makes deliveries to the homes of friends whose dogs he knows well, and those dogs just lose it when he's in uniform. And these are dogs that don't mind the mailman, the meter man, or the plumber. He's convinced it's the hat, but I think it's those god-awful shorts. :D

I think UPS ought to reconsider the color.

Oh, you're right there! Odd Job was result of a very accidental litter from the little Rottweiler female Charley had. He wasn't ready to breed her because she was only a year old, but crafty old Joe, the Bull Mastiff, managed to do the deed. She didn't have any milk, and even with staying up and bottle feeding every hour, only one pup survived.

Charley was watching a James Bond movie one afternoon - I think it was Goldfinger. But it was the one with the Oriental henchman named Odd Job that was just so tough no one could get the better of him. When they hit him in the head with something incredibly hard - like an iron bar or something - it didn't faze him at all.

Charley heard a crash, and ran to check the box on top of the washing machine where he had the week old pup with some old towels and a hot water bottle. He couldn't find the pup anywhere, and it wasn't making any noise, but he saw part of one of the towels partway down between the washing machine and the dryer. He looked down and the pup had managed to crawl out of the box and had fallen down in between on the concrete floor - head first! Charley figured he had to be dead, especially since he wasn't crying, whimpering or making any noise at all. He pulled the washing machine out of the way and reached down to get the pup out, and it was alive and kicking! He decided right then and looked at the pup and said, "You're Odd Job - that's your name!"

He ended up being one of Charley's all time favorite dogs.

Well I guess Duke's a weirdo. :) He will sometime bark just hearing the truck, but usually it takes seeing the actually delivery guy to get anything out of him. And heck, the one time he saw one he barked like mad over to the guy and then was all wiggles. Crazy dog. :p

I want it noted that--although I say this about almost every dobie I meet--Duke is GORGEOUS! I really miss having a dobie. Okay, return to your regularly scheduled thread. :)
