Or: Why my neighbors might need a good smacking.
Before I make an idiot of myself and screw up my genetics, let me ask a question. Merle is dominant, correct? Therefore, to get merle pups, you must have at least one merle parent?
My neighbors have a doberman mix female. She is an outside dog, and apparently went into heat about 4 months ago. Want to guess what happened from there?
The resulting progeny are now about five weeks old. My neighbors are convinced they are wolfdogs, because only a wolf could have scaled the 5 foot tall chain link fence to breed to Daisy.
Never mind that we're very close to a major city and a wolf has never been sighted anywhere near here.
Mom is black and tan and short haired. 4 of the 6 puppies are blue merle and very, very fluffy. Actually, they bear a striking resemblence to the unneutered Aussie two streets over. Hmm.....
The further issue is that they want to take the puppies to the pound as 'wolfdogs', where they will immeadiatly be euthanized, as it is policy here not to adopt out hybrids.
So, if a merle parent must be present and merle does not exist in wolves, therefore, the puppies must not be wolfdogs. My neighbor will still probably take them to the pound, because he is not at all interested in looking for homes, but at least they'll have a chance to be pulled by a rescue if he doesn't claim that they're wolfdogs.
