For the last year I've really been thinking about grooming. Last week my 'position was eliminated' at the publishing company I had been at. :( Strangely, my groomer mentioned to my sister days before that she's looking for someone to train to help her out and eventually take over.

I would love to hear anything about the learning process!

You should talk to this groomer and see what she is looking for. Some people want a person who has taken a grooming course then train them further at their shop as you don't learn "everything" in school. You may want to see if she will let you hang around for a day to watch and see if it's something you will like. Then she may start you out bathing and blow drying dogs. At our shop my sister hired a girl right out of grooming school where she did not learn anything properly. But, she basically had to train her from scratch. The best thing about this girl and why my Sister was willing to take her on was she has excellent work ethics. She also had previous positions with a Vet clinic and worked for the SPCA and pre Vet studies and had/has excellent dog handling skills. That is one of the most important things to my Sister is good dog handling skills and personality. That is very important that the groomers all click and work well together, a competitive personality can be annoying to work with.
