Oh I LOVE mismatched ears!

No drool but that's not superficial right??? I got slimed by a boxer once and I swore off that forever.

I want my next sheltie to have Nikki length coat. It was perfect and not too poofy.

Bear in mind these are superficial and likely dumb lol take it in jest

- Breeds I deem too popular in my area (yorkie, wheaten, pug, frenchie, doodle)
seriously though where did all the wheatens come from?
- Anything involving a groomer. Not just because of the cost but because SUPERFICIALLY I would resent being guilt tripped about not brushing/de-tangling my own dog frequently enough which groomers tend to do lol and ain't nobody got time for that
- No drool because ew
- No dachshunds. Incredibly superficially I saw a few of them in wheelchairs on TV and now every time I see them running around I can't help picture them rolling around and that makes me concerned/uncomfortable. Chances of them injuring themselves is pretty low but I know I'd be paranoid so no.
- Also no hounds. AROOOOOOO
- No schnauzers. my neighbor had three of them that were all assholes and they barked at me walking to school as a kid (and one of them bit me once! Little ******* crawled under his fence just to bite me! Nothing major but grrr) Superficial because I've met plenty of nice ones but still can't shake the image of those three jerks when they pop up on my list of maybe somedays
- Dark dogs because they tend to be hard to photograph
- Malinois, they wind up at the local shelter in Miami a lot (local private security businesses breed them or something) always off their rockers and neurotic and like the schnauzers...can't shake the impression when it comes to owning one ever. I mean I doubt even a well bred one would be my type but still.
- English bulldog/pug/frenchie etc...I'm not cleaning out anythings wrinkles
- Probably the most selfish of all, pit bull/ or mix (/rottie/doberman/GSD) of any kind of sort or resemblance because I just don't want to deal with the stigma in any form (renting, people, laws, BSL). It's just EASIER to not, and it's for totally superficial reasons I believe they are such lovely sweet dogs... superficially it's just easier to have a dog most people tend to love at first glance. Rules get bent, people are in general less stupid when out in public...I've seen how people act around BSL breeds and jesus what a pain.
- Huskies. Remember that episode of Me or the dog (that show with the british dog training lady) with the husky and that girl and it peed on the bed and looked like a demon...yea.... plus the whole shedding thing.
- Sighthounds. Why you so skinny? I find cuddling/petting them very different (my best friend owns a whippet) and the whole wardrobe issue to go out and nesting beds and blankets just oy.
- Anything with ears so long they hang in the bowl/on the ground. Stinky mess (cocker, basset, etc...)
- With traits describes as "cat like" or "independent" (akita, shiba, spitzes in general etc..) AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT. I don't want a cat, I want a dog who thinks I am the coolest **** ever and follows me around from room to room
- Moody/sad looking dogs (any of the droopy hound/mastiff family) how depressing. Plus I feel like their faces get heavy and I find myself lifting them..
- GIANT breeds. I wouldn't be able to take the "your dog is really big" comments constantly...and the space.
- Cropped eared dog. Because I get enough of WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS TAIL?! With Merlin (and safe to say most people assume he was born without it) I can't imagine the crap I'd get for ears (Doberman and company)
- Rough coated collie. LASSIE LASSIE LASSIE LASSIE LASSIE
- Basenji. like WTF is that noise, I thought because they didn't bark they were quiet
- Visla. Dog sat one and she was so crazy she would attack light reflections/mirrors (including the reflection in my glasses)...longest 3 weeks of my life.

:rofl1: Chances are, I have loved and known many of each of these and would probably own one. These are just the silly things going on in my head

Yea, without a tail, what do you use as a handle?
I use butt fluff lol or legs mostly :rofl1:

There's actually a ton of stuff that I don't find cute and that would turn me off a dog. I can only think of a few off the top of my head....

Long ears (like, even spaniel ears), feathering, curly hair, short legs, droopy eyes, and drool dear God NO.

I somehow missed my biggest truly superficial turn offs (because I don't know if drooling or snorting is truly superficial):

White faces and too wide blazes
Diluted eyes
Dilution in eye rims and noses (I'm down with a red rednose, but pink is creepy)

I don't like popular breeds. I will never go purchase a border collie, sheltie, or a Bernese mountain dog, I prefer different breeds, so I am drawn to the uncommon, Bouvier are probably the most commonly known breed I would ever buy.

Getting even more superficial:

The reaaaaally long spaniel ears that are all narrow at the top and then flare out at the bottom. Do not like.

What I REALLY hate, and this is a grooming thing, is how on show setters/some spaniels?, the top of the ear is stripped or shaved. If someone offered me my dream dog, but the qualifier was that the ears always had to be kept like that, I'd have to turn it down. My hatred is irrational but I just think it looks so unnatural and horrible.

Add mismatched paw color (like, all but one foot is white. No!), wide blazes, no or minimal coloring on head, super dark copper trim on merles, and noses that aren't long to my list. Nola has a perfect muzzle IMO; long and narrow but her head balances it out so she doesn't look odd like a smooth collie.

The Irish Setter reminds me...I cannot do Setters out of show coat. I just have this image of what an Irish/English should look like, and I can't do it. Field type ES with super short coats? Noooo. They look wrong.

Oh and superficially.. I don't care for Gordons. Not a fan of their look. It's just the big jowls and their body is a little odd and the coat is mismatchy (straight AND curly).

It depends on the ear type/set/shape as to whether that would even work on a certain dog or not. I don't like the dramatic trim like in the picture above, but shaving the backside (at least) serves a purpose as that hair is THE most likely to mat. That being said, Bailey has the correct ear set and shape for it, so I generally keep her ears trimmed like that because I do like it. Buzz did not and Gabby does not, so theirs are trimmed differently. Bailey has a traditional show set and shape. Buzz has Welshie ears (high ear set, large round ears)! Gabby has a traditional show shape (triangular), but her ear set is WAY too high. Well, Gabby's ears are still growing in very, very, very slowly.

Bailey ears

Buzz ears they look ungroomed but I stripped out/thinned out the top of the ear and trimmed the ends to be rounded, but they have grown out a little in this picture

Also (haha) my question was "How many ears do dogs have?"

This thread is reminding me of all sorts of things I don't like :rofl1:

edited out because I realized I was getting way off with specific dislikes within a breed that I like opposed to superficial reasons for not being into a specific breed.

As with others, a lot of the breeds that I don't find aesthetically attractive are also the ones that wouldn't fit my wants in terms of personality, temperament, drive, whatever.

When can we start just genetically engineering our own dogs so they're all perfect?

Dwarfy dogs--I love corgis, but I couldn't do it. The way they move makes me uncomfortable.
True that. I'll never own a dwarf breed again.

As for me, the only one I can think of pre-coffee is that I recently realized the thing I don't like about Springers is the way they pant. Maybe it's just the one's that I've been around (Megan's dogs), but they all pant in a weird rhythmic fashion and it annoys the crap out of me. I adore her dogs otherwise, hate the way they pant. If they could just stop that, I may actually consider owning one someday.

I would also like to figure out if it's something to do with the shape of their mouth? In which case I need to figure out if setters do it to. Because I like setters, I don't think I could deal with that type of panting for a dog's lifetime.

Oh, and I don't care for light colored dogs. If I found the *perfect* Labrador breeder and they only bred yellow Labs, regardless of shade...I think I would keep looking. Same with Sedge colored Chessies (although oddly enough, I think I'd be okay with a darker deadgrass). I just don't care for gold/fox red/white colors in Labradors.

And I also don't care for heavy feathering, which is why I will likely never seek out a Golden or Flat Coat, and why if I ever end up with a spaniel I would want one that is field bred in order to stack the coat odds in my favor.

ETA: oh, and barking! Not whether the dog actually barks, but how the bark sounds. I actually really used to like Boxers, but the *noise* that comes from their mouth when they bark! o_O Not all of them are bad, but that kind of squeeling, raspy, pig-like noise...heck no. I would be twlling my poor dog to shut up every time it made a sound, and crate training a puppy would be torture. I can't stand the bark of most of the brachy breeds, and oddly enough, a lot of Pit Bulls. I much prefer deep(er) woofing barks as opposed to the higher pitched yips or arfs. And while I don't care for herding dog yaps, they don't grate on me quite like squeeling barks do.

That is so funny because I don't see shelties around here at all. It's ALLLLLLL border collies. The last two trials have had 0 shelties, and the one before had a grand total of 2.

I dunno why but I do have a hangup about having a super popular breed too. I always love watching the more unusual dogs run.

Funny how things vary by area. I think I've said it before, but around here Aussies and Shelties both outnumber BCs at trials fairly frequently. Granted there are still a lot of BCs...there are just a lot of agility dogs in general.

As for me, I obviously don't care whether my dog is of a common or uncommon breed (or a totally unique mix). ShaiCrew is an equal opportunity employer, haha.

Unless you're missing a tail. Must have a tail!

Yeah shelties are just very uncommon in this area in general. Even in the pet realm of things BCs, Aussies, ACDs, and Minis all are wayyy more popular. Papillons are more popular too.

Especially the minis, I feel like they've displaced shelties.

After labs and goldens I'd bet aussies/MAS are the most popular breed I see at the parks.

It may be a mouth shape thing. Heidi also pants like that. When I initially got her I thought it would improve once she lost all the excess weight. She definitely pants less, and it's quieter, but it's still there. It doesn't necessarily bother me, but it is different than the other dogs.
