I have a 10 month old puppy. I take her to the local dog park a couple days a week. When it is time to go she refuses to listen when I call her to come. However the bigger problem is that she will lie down and not move. I have tried putting her back up on her legs to walk and she completly lies back down. I do not want to pull her as that could be harmful to her, and I do not want to carry her out as she will think that is the answer. I have also tried walking away and going towards the gate, hoping she would follow on her own but she does not come, she just lies down and watches me. We also have this problem when I take her for walks. If I try to go in one direction she lies down and won't come. If I go in the other direction she will move. Any suggestions???

My grandma's dog Java is the same on walks and when it comes time to go outside and go potty.

Try some really yummy, stinky treats like tuna fish or peanut butter, let her get a sniff and small lick and then back up encouraging her to move along with you, if she steps forward reward again. Continue this with lots of praise and motivation and see if she isn't up and moving on her own shortly.

USE treats when this happens. When she goes to lie down show her the treat then if she starts to come torwards you tell her "come and say her name" keep doing this when ever she does this and she should learn the come commandso she you can tell her to "come" when she does this. Also when you tell her come you can have a sound with the come word. I will tell Lizzie(at the same time) come and hit my leg so she knows when she hears me hit my leg and say "come" she KNOWS to come. Good Luck!!

Do you only call her to you when it''s time to go? If so she is associating coming to you with something bad (leaving) even if you do praise her for coming. I would recommend re-training come using a whole new command (maybe use "here" instead) and when at the dog park call her to you every now and then and give her a little tidbit then send her off to play again. Vary up how many times you call her to you before you call her and then go home so she doesn;t anticipate that the fourth time you call her will always be when it''s time to leave or you''ll just wind up back where you started again.

Good advice! In addition, at home, in no distractions, practice her recall. Make it the most fun she's ever had everytime she comes to you. Treats, games, happy voice. Run the other way and make a game out if it. Get her excited and get her running to you. Start out with very short distances and work up. Never call her to come when you're going to end all the fun or when you have to do something awful....like clip nails. Go get her. Don't use the cue word, "come" or "here" ....whatever you use.

Good luck. Happy training.
