I love a dog who has a mind of their own... those are the kinds of dogs that save your life & really teach you something. Fozzie is a FAR CRY from a Fila or an Akita, but he isn't mindlessly biddable and while the kind of dog he is used to annoy me before I knew him, I'm addicted to it now. I love his sense of self.
We had a really well-bred Akita when I was a little kid, and he was truly a great specimen of his breed, a noble and intuitive dog. I meet so many poorly bred Akitas now and people who have no business owning them.
It's sad that Cesar Millan and his supporters/followers aggressively perpetuate the myth that a dog who is a leader is a threat to their owner. That dogs must be submissive, passive, devoid of passion or joy and roll on their back and pee themselves if you so much as glance at them. With the right owner, a dog who is a natural leader is an amazing companion and an asset to their family.

Haha, I'm glad we're of like opinion
In terms of Akita's specifically I've only met a handful - one of them had a rather intense attitude and really needed to be held back by his/her handler (a rather nervous looking Japanese gentleman), another was a extremely beautiful, well bred and seemed like a real hardcore genuine Akita - he was indifferent to me, guardy against other dogs/animals, and really stuck to his owner - yup, a true Akita I would say. The rest were all pretty watered down - very foxy/soft looking and mellow. Some of them were pretty don't get me wrong but they were nothing like the type of Akita's that are talked about in my sig quote lol.
I love dogs with minds of their own as well - people pleasers are wonderful as well but I find dogs in their own sort of "realm" of self the dogs for me. Kuvasz, Caucasian Ovcharkas, Boerboels, Kangals, Borzois (perhaps a 'softer' breed than others mentioned I admit), Eurasiers, Dogue De Bordeaux's....now these are my dogs =D
