You can also look into Acers. We have had ours for a couple of years and it is great. They are the third biggest computer company behind IBM and Apple so you know they are good (or atleast should be). I got a high quality laptop at a very reasonable price. Also you can't go wrong with the computer company that supports the Ferrari FI team.....

I think what she meant by the Sony comment is that
Sony stuff works ONLY with Sony stuff and nothing else. Like my Toshiba power supply can be replaced with a universal adapter, a Sony laptop might not be able to (just theorizing, I've never used a Sony laptop).
Ok I see.

LOL. I tell you that was the end for me when they told me that. Oh it's not under warranty because you move the laptop around. Hahahah.

GO if a computer dies in six years like yours did, I would say there would be no regrets.
Nope. HP is a fairly good computer. Nothing really special but they're reliable. Just came home one night and the computer was dead, no warning or anything, no sign of degradation, just dead.

Other than that it was quality.

Our HP desktop is only fried because my sister loads it up with all sorts of crap. It's about to die, but honestly, it's like... 5 years old, so it's about time. My toshiba is 3 years old and is still going strong. (knock on wood)

Sony is a horible company. Do not even bother buying from them. Plus like Chewbecca said, Sony only suports Sony made products.

My family had a Sony Vaio desktop. Nasty little thing it was, died twice on us so my dad and I ended up gutting it, replacing the case, mother board, and cooling system and uping the powersuply. Since you CAN NOT do that sort of thing with a laptop very easily I would go with the HP.

One of my Dad's Prof. also said that it is a very bad idea to buy anything Sony. They have gone down the drain and really are not very respected anymore.

I would say Alienware but the nasty Dell company bought them(Only thing worse than Dell is Gateway and Sony) and they use to cost an arm and a leg.

I will throw my opinion as a NON computer person, LOL

Kevin's last laptop was a toshiba........it was GREAT. I knocked it off the bed, the kids stepped on it, it was dropped countless times, not to mention the abuse of carrying it back and forth to work 5 days a week. I don't like laptops in general, but that one lasted over 4 years.......YES, FOUR years with out a lick of trouble. When it died it just died though.......no warning.

His laptop now is a Compaq (which is HP more or less any more) and he likes it fine.......does everything he wants to do, has a dvd rom and a butt load of memory. I would have rather seen us with another Toshiba......but eh, I don't use it anyway ;)

i have heard a lot of people saying not to buy a sony, however, i LOVE my Sony Vaio. It is like 6+ years old, and still works great!!

i wouldnt go with HP...ive heard horror stories, and my mom's sucks.

I personally want my next laptop to be an Apple :)

i would probably opt for the sony. i like hp. have had an hp desktop that lasted forever and it was highly abused! but sony's quality rivals apple's quality IMO.

i would love a new mac book, but i aint a bazzillionaire. so i have an ancient ibook that i bought used. for surfing the net and email it is great, but it is so old that for any high powered usage it leaves a bit to be desired. oh well, i mainly bought it for net use.

edit: now if anyone wants to get rid of their hp 48gx calculator pm me. i'd be willing to give it a good home with lots of love!

You know, our gateway still is running, and we got it two houses ago... which makes it from... 2000? At least. But it only runs microsoft word and minesweeper now. lol

Two houses ago. Love it. Hahaha

Desktops seem a bit more long lived, Laurelin. I have an old 99 gateway that was still working when I unplugged it. I plan to eventually whack it to pieces for disposal, on a day when I am REALLY angry at somebody.

I would say IBM, I had an old A31 model that got dropped out of a two story window, and after replacing the hard drive it booted right up and still runs great, but don't look that good anymore. lol
