Wear knee pads. It makes such a difference. Especially from an east coast carving background. Pull a big g turn, then you're on pond ice...

I have an older, streamlined inline set, but they probably make specialty pads. Even the "tactical" ones without the hard shell look pretty good, maybe more comfortable.
