Smokey's Thanksgiving

Being a Senior citizen, each year one of my daughters invites me for Thanksgiving dinner. This year, one daughter is out of town visiting her in-laws and the other daughter is visiting her inlaws who live locally. I was invited to the local inlaws, but decided to turn down the invitation and to cook dinner myself for Smokey and me. I was thinking that last thankgiving, Smokey was living in a cage in a shelter and had been there for about 6 months, so it probably wasn't a very enjoyable time for her. Then I thought about all the fun times I have had with this great dog since I adopted her this past May. The walks that we take every day, for miles in the park, her sitting next to me when I am on the computer or practicing my keyboards, the big excited hello I get every time I return from shopping or running an errand , her looking at me every morning to see if I am still sleepiing or not before she comes over to say hello . Smokey has taught me many things about life and animals in the past 6 months, and the least I could do was to make her a nice Thanksgiving dinnner.

As soon as I put the turkey in the oven this morning and the aroma's started spreading though the house, Smokey looked like something different was going on. She followed me every time I went into the kitchen to check the oven. Dinner was finally ready and I decided to eat first which is the normal routine whenever I give her some leftovers. She never bugs me when I am eating and will sit there and wait patiently until I have finished my dinner and then I feed her. As usual, she did the same thing today, although I could see she was having a more difficult time with the waiting. Finally I felt the turkey was cool enough to feed her some, and I sliced off some breast meat and put some sweet potato and baby peas in with it and fed it too her. He eye's lit up and she ate every bit "including " the peas...

I'm very happy that Smokey had a nice thanksgiving this year, and I am very thankful that she is in my life.. :)

Bob.. you love that girl so much. I may not agree with some of the things you say, but by God, I love how you love your dog. Thank you for opening your heart to her. I'm sure she is and will always be, grateful.

Oh how beautiful! Smokey deserves you as much as you deserve her. I can tell from how you wrote just the abundance of love you have for each other. I'm glad the two of you have each other.
