Our lab's muzzle area stinks, seriously its rank. I can't even stand to be near his head anymore, like a garbage smell, sour. His breath is fine, his teeth are all in great shape but his face itself stinks. Any ideas? He does not have the typical "tight face" of a lab, he drools quite a bit and has large jowls, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. It never used to smell, but the past few months it's awful.

You could try washing his skin folds on his face with something like chlorahex wipes to help with any bacterial growth that might be there :).

When did you discovered the stinky smell on your lab's muzzle? I suggest you bathe him thoroughly this time. Then check if he still have the stinky muzzle.

This happened with Indy. I would smell something RANK when she was near me, and just sniff her neck fur, which just smells like Indy, not even doggie odor, just... Indy. Then one day I was just like WTF IS THAT SMELL.

I smelled her face. It was like she had plowed her face into something rotting. I washed her face off in the bathtub with her full bath (boy she loved that, because I don't normally scrub anything but the top of her head and under her chin) and it went away.

So it's entirely possible he just shoved his face into something gross lol. My Lab likes to coat just one side of her body in the rankest sh*t ever. It's like, "I can barely stand to touch you to WASH you, you disgusting dog" :p

He gets groomed every 2-4 weeks thoroughly. Lasts maybe a day and is stinky again. During this time he might only leave the house to do his business and come back in. Going to try the chlorahex wipes. Thanks.

If you have a black light, if not, they are really cheap on Ebay, etc, take a look at him with it and see if something lights up. My old dog Gus had some kind of nasty fungus on the bottom of his muzzle and I have never smelled anything like it, kind of like a garbage can with a slight pine scent. Horrible when it was really warm out. I have him some pills and put some lotion on it and it went away in about a month and never came back. Getting rid of the staph infection on his chin that his entire litter was born with took a lot longer. It didn't smell nearly as bad, either.
