Well, Sunny is finally housetrained. I can let him wander the house and there are no more mysterious puddles. He is even learning to use a bell to go out the back door when he needs it. This is sort of where the problem comes in. See, I don't want to discourage the bell, it seems to me like it would be discouraging a toddler from using the potty when he said he needed to. However there is a fresh layer of snow on the ground and Sunny LOVES snow. Well, the little devil has decided that his bell is not just for potty time but for play time and snow eating time too. (Let me assure you he is getting PLENTY of exercise and water so these are not needs but strong puppy desires.) He'll ring that goofy jingle bell till it practically falls off the wall to get me to let him out. It is -2 wind chill outside! I don't like standing outside waiting for pee that might not come until he decides he wants to go in! He is trained to potty on command but lately he doesn't feel like it I guess. I don't know. Goofy dog. He looks so proud whenever I open the door for him, like "gee this place is sweet, 3 square meals a day, a warm cooshy bed to sleep on and a MAID who comes when called with a bell. :D "

lol we're going through the exact same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes I just leave the door open so my dog, lexi, can jsut go out whenever she wants. I want to get a doggy door (i dont know the correct term for it) but i dont know how to asseble it. or how to attach it to my door. am i supposed to cut through the glass??? hehe i dont know... anyway it can be annoying sometimes especially if im busy and she wants to go out every 10 mins jsut to lick the snow. but shes soo cute so i guess it makes up for it hehehe.

Just wondering what kind of bell are you using?

I am using a jingle bell, like the kind people have on their doors at Christmas time. I tied it to a piece of ribbon and tacked it to the wall at his nose level. The noise is pretty distinctive so I know what he is doing when he rings it and don't just assume he has gotten into something (as usual  )

We have a doggy door and its worth a million times its value. We couldnt intall it where you would normally with sliding patio doors, we have Pella doors and didnt want to mess them up with the doggy door contraption. SO, hubby took a skill saw and cut an exact sqaure hole in the wall of the house in one of the back bedrooms and installed just the frame and flappy door part in the square hole. He even bought nice trim and weather stripping, painted it and it looks great. I made a brick pathway from the house to the brick walkway so they wouldnt track mud in. When I am at work, my dogs can go out and enjoy the day if they want and I do keep a pad lock on my gate to keep others out.

I do like the bell trick and its a funny story to hear how smart your dog is to find out how to maximize its use! LOL
