Shock Collar Alternative

I saw a thread about using shock collars and I'm not sure if it was discussed (didn't see anything). But for those of you that wanted to try the shock collar but are afraid to, there are other methods. My miniature pinscher barks constantly and I live in an apartment. I would never use a shock collar on her, no matter how small it it, I tried the sonic ones and she didn't even flinch. The best one i found is called Gentle Spray. It's a little box filled with citronella so when she barks it sprays a little mist that startles her. Since is works on all her senses (see it, hear it, smell it, feel it and probably taste it too) it's more effective and much more humane. Hopes this helps

I've heard about those. It's good to hear that they do work. I wouldn't consider a shock collar unless there were no other alternative for a serious situation. I don't really know that one would even phase my Kharma. She bit the electric cattle fence twice after getting shocked when she was only 12 weeks old!

We used tri tronics shock collars for the hard case runaway dogs or ones that ate the bird on the return trip. A good collar has several settings, it doens't have to be a SHOCK but a quick get the dog's attention is better then losing him forever and sometimes I don't see how else this could be done. A hunting dog is no good when swallows the bird whole and returns only a snout full of feathers. The collar we used had a soundburst so the shock (I held it in my hand and tried it..i certainly didn't drop it) doenst have to be used after the first or second time. If I had the money today I would buy one in a skinny minute for i could ensure that Victor would always come when called and wouldn't leave the property. I don't think it would take more than one light buzz and my two biggest challenges would be solved. AS it is now he has to stay on the leash out in the yard, if we had this tool he could be lose and enjoying a great romp on a nice size of land. My house may be a hobbit hole but my yard is awesome.

It is the $#%#holes that have the cattle prods and the shock collars that abuse them that give the whole thing a bad name. I have seen them in action behind the scenes at field trials. I could have used a cattle prod on the one that is writing the book..I would have loved to chase him all over the field with it! What i saw as a "bird boy" hasstuck with me for a lifetime. Sorry i just had to add that.

Wish I had space to let my dog run free. I live in NYC so no backyard. I tried taking her to the dog parks but she HATES it. Too many big dogs and she got trampled on. So instead I take her to strips of beaches in brooklyn so she can chase the seagulls...I highly doubt she'll even catch one, but sure is persistent

Smkie, Tri-tronics is the one that my Fila expert friend recommends when it's necessary to go that route. These dogs have such a high pain threshold that it's about the only one that has a wide enough variance to be able to get their attention when they are intent on what they're doing.

In the old days before the collar existed what a trainer would do..I was the one to hold the piece of paper in my hand (how trusting is that) would be to step it off and with a gun shoot a round of shot. If the shot didn't go through the paper then the distance was correct. Then the test was set up. The trainer knew just about exactly where that dog was going to start chomping the bird and that is where he set up the test. I never once thought that they might hit me, and they never did. The dog would run through, feathers would start flying and then it would grab that bird up quick with it's hind quarters fairly flying all the way back to the line. This back fired once when the dog was later doing a test in the derby which is a 2 year old class. THe test was set up with a suprise bird. The dog was returning with the first, and the gun went off for the second. Her fanny flew up in the air and she couldn't be convinced there was another bird out there after returning. I think the tri tronics is a lot safer...especlally for the bird boy that has to stand out there holding the piece of paper! Really i was just a kid..I would have done anything they told me to do.

Well when we adopted Cinco they gave us a collar that worked like a "choke chain" but it was a fabric collar and has worked wonders! Sorry if this isn't what ur looking for.

Hi there,
I have used on of the spray collars on my collie. It worked brilliantly and very quickly. Now if he starts barking I can put the collar on without a battery in and it works just as well. It didn't work for my deaf dog though, as he couldn't hear it I guess he couldn't work out where the smell was coming from. I have used a Husher muzzle on him. It is a muzzle made of elastic, that doesn't stop the dog barking just tires the jaw mucles (spelling) and teaches them not to continue barking.
