Ian and I were waiting at our vet's office last week for an appointment, and we overheard a woman talking to a vet tech while she was dropping off her dogs. The vet tech and receptionist commented on how cute her papillons look when they're shaved... :yikes:

The pap owner tells them that she's had her paps shaved for the past 20 years, and that they look soooooo much better without all of the fur.

So after hearing this, I had to sneak a look at them. They didn't look like paps at all... they were probably about 20lbs each, had overbites, and looked like ACD/pug mixes. One of red/white, and the other was black/white... but they had more color than they did white.

The woman continued to chat about how awesome it was to have them shaved, and how it's great for them and she didn't understand why it wasn't more popular to shave paps... :yikes:

I wanted to tell her that they are nicknamed "butterfly dogs" for a reason, and that it's silly to shave them... but I just sat there in awe of how weird it was.

On these ones, even their HEADS were shaven :yikes:

It was horrible. They have such pretty coats... WHY would someone want to shave them?

Papillons just aren't built to look nice without hair . A smooth coated papillon doesn't exist for a reason, LOL. They are really lanky dogs, I mean... you've seen my bath pictures of them. There's not much there under than the hair.

Shelties are another one. they look awful under their hair! I always laughed at Trey when he got wet... Super long nose and neck.

Shaving shelties damages the hair, and they'll never get their gorgeous coats back again. We had one sheltie come in that was shaved, OMG it was ugly! It's coat was all grey and prickly and nasty because it was just undercoat.

Do paps have a double coat? I just can't imagine a shaved pap looking goo AT ALL.

A lady came in with a shaved papillon at my vet's office. I had no idea what kind of dog it was! Why would anybody do something like that?

I have to disagree with this. My Harley's undercoat was so thick that it was like being wrapped in cotton wool. I line-brushed him twice a week. Didn't help. He smothered in the heat and humidity. I had his coat taken down to a couple of inches every year as soon as the real summer started. By October, it had grown back as thick and luxuriant as ever. Maybe if he'd been shaved to the skin, things would have been different.

LOL yeah... googling 'papillon' can come up with some interesting stuff.

Nope, no double coat. Pap hair is different than most longhaired breeds. Just a silky, single coat with no undercoat. I doubt shaving a pap would really damage the hair honestly but they're just meant to have hair imo.

All I can say about shelties is Trey's hair was partially shaved for a large tumor removal when he was about 8. His hair grew back in very wiry and grey too. Weird.

People get the dogs shaved because either a) they think it cuts down on shedding b) they think the dog will be cooler in warm temps or c) they don't have the time/aren't able to brush the dog, often because they can't train the dog to be still or they just brush over the top of the dog and it gets matted underneath and needs to be shaved.

In case of A or B, they're just wrong. In the case of C....meh. I guess it's better than rehoming the dog, especially if they're spending the time they would be brushing exercising or doing other things with the dog.

You can go as far as about a inch on any double coated dog, and it shouldnt ruin the coat then, as it isnt getting right to the guard hair. if you go any shorter it will ruin the coat.

There is a big difference between trimming up and full body shave down. Full body shave downs on double coated dogs damages the thyroid, and throws off the regrowth cycle.

Papillons are a single coated breed (if they have the right coat). It probably wouldn't hurt the papillon but it certainly would look stupid. Seriously, it's not that hard to do coat upkeep on most. Only my two boys really require occasional clean up trims.

I can't imagine a shaved Pap......those couple of google pics where the body was shaved and the head left alone weren't 'too' terrible, but still not attractive at all!

Yeah fyi...don't google "shaved papillon" with the safe search off. *shudders*

You have NO idea how many times I've heard sheltie breeders say they wished there were smooth coated shelties, much like smooth collies!!
