Shar Pei or Neopolitan Mastiff

I've got a neighbor that says they have a breed of Shar Pei that weighs 165 lbs and is not overweight. It's a large gray colored dog with a good bit of wrinkles (from what I could see from a distance). I recognized it as being a Neopolitan Mastiff or at least an NM mix. She swears that there are different kinds of Shar Pei's other than the Chinese Shar Pei. Is this true? If so, I can not find any of them listed with the AKC or CKC. Somehow, I think she's off her rocker and trying to make her dog seem more 'spectacular' than it really is. She also doesn't believe in walking her other dog on a leash. According to her "it always stays by her side" and if it leaves her side "it gets beat all the way home with a newspaper" (the GSD mix that was walking behind her daughter, loose and pooped in front of our building...not the NM *or Shar Pei?*).

Can anyone tell me who's right? Are there different kinds of Shar Pei's? If so, do you have any pictures or websites I can look at and go to?
If not, I believe I'll let her know she has no idea what she's talking about....after I find out where she got her 'mis'information from. :p (Only because she thinks she's a know-it-all.)

Everything I've seen on the Shar Pei is a medium dog . . . You are probably right - and hey, a Neo is a rarer breed to see than a Shar Pei is now, so if she's going for exclusivity, she's barking up the wrong breed ;)

I swear the dog is the size/shape of a Neo Mas. I'll let the property manager know and she'll pass the word along. :) I think it'll be funny to hear what she has to say about that the next time we meet. ;)
Before I say anything I want to make absolutely sure and get some other responses from people like Mordy, Doberkim, Zoom, Roxy, etc.

There is absolutely no such thing as a 165 lb. SharPei. From what I know about the breed they used to be quite a bit larger...2000 years ago:eek: ;) . She's pulling your leg.:)

Problem is, Doc, there's no such thing as a 240 pound Fila either . . . but there's a jackass in Turtletown, Tennessee breeding them like that. Never count out what some unethical moron might come up with

True enough Renee, you should see what comes into class. Sometimes I look at my registration and can't match the dog to what it's owner claims it is...one never can be sure. I had a botson terrier come in a few months back...5 months old..52 lbs:eek: (huge)....not the least bit chubby. The owner brought her papers on the dog to the first class, I was shocked. I of course told her that he was beautiful and proceeded as normal.

Jeez . . . you just wonder "why????" sometimes. That obviously wasn't an accident. It takes more than one generation to change size that drastically.
I'll try to dig up that class picture. His name is pepper and he looks like a cartoon character next to the other "normal sized" boston in class...(Baby Huey):D . His mama sure did love him, good thing too cause boy was he full of p!ss and vinegar.;)

The bottom line, I guess, in my mind is whether there's any real need to confront this woman just to tell her she's wrong about something that doesn't really matter as far as owning a dog for a pet goes. If she planned to breed, that would be another matter entirely, but it just seems kind of petty otherwise. Let her be happy with her dog as long as she's not hurting anyone.

I know, I know. But this is the same woman that didn't believe it when the property manager told her that her daughter and one of their other dogs came to visit someone in our building, without a leash, following 10 - 20 feet behind her and pooped in our front yard! She flat out called me a liar until I brought it up today in front of her and the property manager. She was like, "That couldn't have been my dog. He always stays by my side and I don't use a leash either." I said, "Well, if Autumn is your daughter and you have a black GSD mix, then it most certainly was your dog!" Her response, "I'm gonna beat that kid of mine. She's not supposed to go anywhere with that dog." She also said that "If he leaves my side, I beat him all the way home with a newspaper."
Now tell me this woman doesn't need to be set straight on some issues. If she thinks it's ok to beat her dog when she doesn't have it on a leash (which is required) and it walks away then she sure as h#!! must think she owns a HUGE shar pei. She was arguing about what kind of dog she had. She really doesn't know and thinks it's something "special". I just don't understand people like that and I don't like 'em either.

LOL 165lb Shar Pei? Oh my gods. Aren't they suppose to weigh between 40 - 50lbs? That woman's very odd. I wonder if she found it at a shelter or from a byb? Definately sounds like a Neapolitan Mastiff or at least a NM mix. Hey maybe it's actually a Neo x Shar Pei? A new designer mutt?
Can you snap a picture of it for us?

Cass.

I don't think there is any such thing as a shar-pei that huge. My last dog was a shar-pei mix (had to be PTS because of severe agression issues) and I did a lot of research on them after the vet told me he was half shar-pei. He only weighed 72 lbs full grown. Sounds like that lady has severe issues....

This woman sounds stupid, aggressive and indifferent to others. Exactly the sort of person who needs to own one large (GSD) and one giant (whatever it is) dog. I wish you luck in dealing with her.

One thought about the sharp-pei/Neo thing - she may be claiming the Neo/Neo mix (which is what it sounds like) is a Sharp-Pei in order to confuse the issue when the inevitable occurs and someone complains about her free-roaming, untrained 165lb dog (I realize you said it's the GSD that roams offleash now, but somehow, I think the other dog will end up offleash eventually). Remember, as she probably does, that much of police and court complaints are decided through paperwork, not with face-to-face evidence of the physical facts, and if the dog's breed is listed as a sharp pei, most people will have vague, cute memories of wrinkly puppies from 1985. Sure, plenty of people later realized that they're more akin to Chows than to Beagles, and are pretty tough dogs. But most people didn't ever get that memo, and the mistake could help this person in the future. Never underestimate a person who lacks any visible evidence of class or decency. They're foul, but they're usually slick.

This definitley isn't a shar pei. However, this woman even has our property manager believing it's at least a shar pei mix. We were in the office earlier today and the woman (with the dogs) name came up. I said, you mean the one that says her dogs a shar pei? And they said, yeah...that dog is a shar pei. I told them, Bull $4!t...shar pei's are max 50 lbs and alot smaller than her dog. That's when the whole, "it's a mix" thing started. Apparently nobody really knows what it is.
