Safe Breeder or Not?

Yes, it could just be the lighting, but it does look to me like that dog could be merle. Its not 100% because the pic is black and white... makes it hard to tell. There will always be breeders who are against merle breeding and merle dogs. And we will never know for sure why or how the merle got there. Its quite possible that it was introduced from adding another breed somewhere down the line. But for me, id love to have a longhair merle chihuahua some day. But what Ive found is that a lot them grow up to be way out of standard, and I dont like oversized "deerheads".
Some awesome breeders do have websites though and I think that's what she is looking for, not necessarily an ad.
Breed clubs can sometimes help you find really fantastic breeders that don't have websites though... or if you have people you know that are really into dogs - ANY breeds - in the right way, ask them if they know anybody who breeds chihuahuas! We found Auggie's breeder because my dad's co-worker has whippets and is big on confo and performance, so my dad asked if she knew anybody that bred shelties, and the response was "Oh yeah she does!"

I'm really not sure what you mean by all this. But, if you're lookng for a chi that's "out of standard," IF that's what you're looking for, I'd suggest going through breed rescue to get the chi. Supporting a breeder who breeds dogs that are out of standard is, IMO, really damaging toward the breed.
Personally, I like the chis that are larger and don't have an apple head. My dog is probably a "deer head" chihuahua, but then she came from a shelter and often I call her a "chihuahua mix" to indicate that she's not a great-looking example of the breed (though of course I personally think she's great looking.

from the looks of it what your looking for 6legz is a VERY typey chihuahua... good apple head, "small" dog, large errect ears and big bright eyes in a lighter coat color...

from what you told me before about size your looking right within breed standard at 3-6 lbs, i will say i have 3, my 3lber is VERY tiny, mabe too small for most firstimers, 3lbs is hawk prey sized, hes built correctly (a chihuahua is a stocky little dog when bred to standard) but hes still incredibly delicate.
rosie is 4 1/2 lbs and vixie is 5lbs...
quite honestly of the 3 of them id say 5-6lbs is the PERFECT size for most wowie owners, anything smaller is just tiny, anything bigger is out of standard...
while for some this isnt an issue it definatly seems like your looking for something VERY close to the ring standard.
and i have to applaud you on having a good idea of what a chihuahua from a good breeder should look like, and even more so to be willing to wait for the right puppy and doing your homework before hand!
this is a WONDERFULL breed for the right person, and if it wernt for the cresties pushing their strange nekkid ways into my heart the wowie would definatly be my "top toy breed" though there definatly a very close second!
im definatly going to check into a couple of breeders in canada that some aquaintences of mine know of, once i get their details ill send them your way...tis the season for everyone to be insanely busy with family stuff lol..
for those members in canada, i tried searching online for the chihuahua club of canada with no luck, im sure you guys have breed specific clubs and if they have a website with a list of breeders that would be a great place to start!
generally members of a specific BREED club (in the usa it would be the chihuahua club of america) uphold stricter standards for their breeders than those who just breedin under a general registration system (aka ckc) so a breed specific club would certaintly be a good place to start.
i am going to give you the link to the chihuahua club of americas breeder referal page.
while of course they cover the USA, you might want to look into breeders in NY and other states that border canada, it may also be worth looking into states further away if they have dogs you realy like...if you decided to buy unseen however you need to be even more diligent about choosing your breeder...so please feel free if you find anyone you like in the states id be happy to check into them for you.
also might be worth contacting breeders through the chi club of america to see if THEY have reccomendations local to you, breeders tend to network, and if you see a breeder with dogs you love you never know they may have sold a dog from lines you like to a breeder in canada or otherwise closer to you.

I have to be attracted to it. I don't find there to be anything wrong with that.

The lady at the Chi meetup here, has a 3lb'er & he is very tiny too. Maybe not so much of a run around get going type of dog? She says he is active...active for something so tiny? I am wondering too of whether you take him with you most places? I am home all the time, unless at the Doctor's, or therapist's, grocery shopping, longest I am away from home, is a couple of hours, other places I go for much longer, I am always able to bring a pet with me. I travel with my dad sometimes on trips, & we've looked into some of the animal friendly places.
I am more so curious as to what you mean by difficult for a first timer...? Health wise/carefulness/handling..
What are some of the best qualities you've found about the Chinese Crested?
It's definitely a busy time of year right now, so it's a no rush situation. I get excited like anyone, but I've had a lot of practice too. There will always be puppies & there will always be adults to choose from as well.
I believe someone on here, or I came across a site for Canada & Chi Breeder's, plus with the Dog's Annual Mag, it's a big chunk of a mag. I am going to check again with a couple aquaintaince's (sp?) here in Calgary too. Thanks for taking a look too.

I am on the South Western Side of Canada....Montana, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Cali, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, more so that area. That I am checking into first. Well, Canada first, so far one that really struck me, & contacted the Breeder, but she said they're not having any litter's until another year. I sent another email back, & asked if it would be in the next 2 years plus, & that I am in no rush, I haven't heard back from her..... :S (maybe it sounds weird to say something like that?) I've been told that the odder something sounds, it usually is... :S oops.

If he was my dog, I'd love him all the same, but I am not attracted to that style if someone might want to call it that.

Just gotta say, i like this style better too. My nephew is this style and i think he's handsome but i'd never promote breeding FOR this (He's a rescue). Even though i think they look better when they look like little dogs and not stuffed toys

Hmmm, if I am getting a pure bred dog, id like it to look the way it is supposed to look like. Nothing against deerhead fans... its just not my preference. I love the chihuahua temperament, but another reason why I love them is because of their look. They have a very cute and sweet expression. I think the deerheads look more terrier like and I am not a terrier person (aside from APBTs). I have a dog that is a chi/min pin mix and she looks just like a deerhead chihauhua. A lot of people think she is pure bred. She has a long pointy muzzle, little head, and long legs, like what a lot of deerheads have as well. I like the short cobby look of the chihuahua. The illustrated standard states that they should be stockier than italian greyhound but not quite as stocky as a pug. When I rescue, looks definitely dont matter as much as when I am going to a breeder. Im basically just looking for a good temperament when I am rescuing.
I guess you can say that when it comes to toy dogs, I like the cute foofoo look. Adorable stuffed animal look if you wanna call it that. Yes, im such a girly girl when it comes to toy dogs. When it comes to larger breeds, I like the look of power, athletisism, and ruggedness of the pit bull, which is my fave breed over chihuahuas.
My 3 pound chihuahua is very active. He is always racing around the house. Ive taken him on 2 mile walks and his little legs are going pretty darn fast just to keep up with my normal pace. Most of the time, he is way out before me on a 6 ft leash. He is terrier like as far as energy goes. These dogs CAN get up an go. His tiny size does not affect that. In fact, hed much rather walk on his own than be carried. This is just my own personal experience.

I think that is overboard too. I think a cute lil hoody to give them some extra warmth, or booties for sensitive feet in the snow(on for a pee, off again inside, unless pee pads. But the dress, they don't wanna be placed in that, in my opinion. Or those silly wigs, or glasses.....:doh: lol
I've also been told they can keep up no problem. One time this past Summer, I saw a very tall fit looking man out for a run, on the trail, & guess what was Pulling him? This Teeny lil Chi!!! It was the cutest thing!
I guess I just feel I need more back up because my dad thinks that because they're smaller that they can't do much. Yet, when we went to the Chi meeting's, and there were around 20-30 of them, running, galloping, jumping around, I think he was thrown aback.
