Here's a story of Flora when she was but two years old. Let it be known that she absolutly despises the sea. She will happily run up and down the sand, but won't go more than leg depth in the ocean.
We were walking along Sumner beach (A beach in Christchurch, New Zealand), and the tide was low. What happens at sumner is there's a sandbar out about 40m or so from the shoreline. Between this bar and the shoreline though is a trench, naturally. Only this trench was fairly deep.
We were walking along said sandbar, and at that stage Flora hadn't learned obedience, and was happy to run off. Now she saw another dog on the shore, and ran to see it. So she was running through the water, and then she hit the drop off. So it looked like she was running alond, then suddenly a huge splash, and she was gone. It was kinda funny to see her flailing around.
To this day, she has not completly trusted water
