My friend called me this morning to tell me that she put her mare to sleep yesterday evening.
Scarlett was a ten-year-old Arab/Mustang cross. She was gorgeous...black as the midnight sky. My friend raised her from a filly. She always had that untameable spirit...that wild restlessness that inhabits so many mustangs...
Scarlett was running through the pasture, when she crashed into the fence. She broke two legs. The vet was already there, checking on a colt...he put her to sleep in the pasture.
I believe they're cremating her, and scattering her ashes on the ranch...they're making a memorial stone for her:
RIP Scarlett...you were one h*ll of a horse.

Scarlett
1996 - 2007
The urge to run, the restlessness
The heart of stone I sometimes get
The things Ive done for foolish pride
The me thats never satisfied
The face thats in the mirror when I dont like what I see
I guess thats just the cowboy in me
