The first two numbers, are they the year it was given? And the rest of the numbers, are they significant?

It might depend a bit on what state you are in, but generally it's just an identification number. So if someone finds your dog and calls the clinic on the tag saying "I found a dog with rabies tag #1234" the clinic should be able to look that number up in their computer and contact you.

The number itself is arbitrary, you were just the 1234th one to get a rabies vaccine/tag from that vet that year.

That's how it is here, too. The tags have an ID number on them, the vet's name, address and phone number, and the year the vac was given.

I don't know how Montana does it, because Zander has a 3-year and isn't due until next year.

But I just checked his tag(MS) and it's the year, vet info, and tag number. In that order.

Here, it's just an identification number, the year given is known by colour/shape

Here the first 2 are the year, the rest is the how manyth tag given out.

We have to get new tags every year even though the rabies is good for 3 years.

    Thanks guys!

I was trying to fill out the form for my dog park tags, couldn't tell if the Kaylee and Traveler were due for their rabies and was trying to see if they would be able to tell when I turn the forms in if they are due by the number of the rabies tag I give. But I don't think they'll be able to.

Our number looks like it's the year (11 for Trav and 10 for Kaylee) followed by a random string of numbers. So since both of them fall within the correct time frame I should be fine.

Ya, here the first two digits are the year issued and then the rest are the ID number.
