Or both of you can answer! :) I was just wondering what happens when you decide that you do not want to keep breeding your line. Do you sell rights to it or just give it away to someone to continue? Or, do you just neuter all of your dogs and call that the end? I know this question sounds silly, but it's something I have been wondering about. Such as, I know Grammy's line was called "Hawthorn Hill." Well, when you decided that you were finished with breeding, was that the total end of Hawthorn Hill or did you turn it over to someone else?

Hi, Pro... for Grammy, she just stopped breeding and neutered/spayed any Hawthorn Hill dog she had. It's not about "rights", it's about principle. She decided she would rather rescue than breed anymore. There's an offspring of her Bubba right now that the people want to get rid of -- after 7 YEARS!!! His name is Koby and he is a sweety. I think my sister is going to take him, or Grammy will, because he's such a great dog. So, again... another "rescue". No need to breed anymore when there are such great dogs needing rescue. She already bred great HH companion dogs and there was no need to continue when rescue became so important for those in need.

Hawthorn Hill was my line and though pups were registered with that name ( with my permission )....none were bred to continue the line. It was in the contract. And, yes, EliN was right. When Goldens became more and more popular and so many went into rescue..it was unfair to bring more pups into the world.

Ok. I understand now. I know it sounded dumb, but it was just something I was wondering about. Thanks :)

Wasn't a dumb question at all. You live and learn. When you register a litter and get the individual pup papers back ...they are marked with numbers and sex of puppy. When the new owner send them in with their choice of name...the breeder checks and signs the area where it gives permission to use kennel name . If they happen to breed, they would then have to contact me to register the litter as Hawthorn Hill litter.

Would they get in trouble if they used your name without permission? Also, if they used a Hawthorn Hill Golden to breed, could they then make a new kennel name for that dog's offspring?

They only have to obtain permission if the kennel name is registered with the AKC. If someone with an unregistered kennel name writes it on the reg. paper, the owner has the right to cross it out and put whatever they wish.

As far as stopping breeding, I only had something like 5 litters in all the years involved with the Manchesters. I just stopped breeding the dogs Nary a bit of difference in the dogs' lives, or mine. Most everyone of the dogs is spayed/neutered anyway. They have always been spoiled pets, so that of course did not change!

I guess Manchester partially answered.... My Kennel name was registered and could never be used by anyone else. When I started my own line, both sire and Dam had their kennel names, but I was able to create my own as a registered breeder , when I registered the litter as Hawthorn Hill pups.

So would a sample name of the foundation bitch be something "Ch. Amdale's Hawthorn Heights Golden Grammy?" and then the pups would just be "Hawthorn Heights Sunny Jim"?

No......not if the bitch were already registered...which some breeders do. If it was not already registered it would be possible to NOT use Amdale....simply cross it out on the slip. THAT is why most breeders who insist their kennel name be used register the pups before they sell them. OR, if the breeder trusts the seller (big mistake to trust anyone when it comes to dogs!) they can do as you suggested and allow the buyer to fill out the remaining name blocks for the pup. It used to be limited to 28 characters I seem to recall.

Man.......I should not EVEN be trying to type!!!! Wonder if there is such as thing as TWI or TUI?? After so long messing around with the computer (3 days and nights) I kept falling into a black pit of sleep. For an hour at a time that is, thanks to having to pee every hour, rofl.
