This isn't for a dog but it is a canine, figured this is the best place to put it.

We contacted the breeder, and gave him our information and what we know, and were just looking to talk at first, but his initial response was that he would put us on the waiting list. Okay then. But that was about 6 months ago and we haven't heard anything else from him at all. The website isn't updated, no emails or anything. I know he is actually a legitimate breeder, but he was also in a bad accident. I figure he has possibly stopped breeding his animals for now because of that, but what would you do?

Would you try to keep in contact or just move on?

I'd probably get back in contact to see if he is still breeding or has anything planned in the near future (depending on when you wanted your critter). If he doesn't get back to you, or doesn't have anything planned due to whatever reason, then I'd hunt around for someone else that has what you are looking for.

The problem with that is that the only other breeder (that anyone seems to know of) stopped breeding as well. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the ban on importing fennec foxes but still being allowed to own/breed them. I don't understand the ban at all but, I'm starting to think the same thing has happened here and it's a pretty big disappointment for us if that's the case. :(

Oh no, that's terribly disappointing. I'd try to contact him and just ask what his breeding plans are at this point, about how long you might expect to wait for a kit, and express that you hope he's recovering well from the accident.

If it's not an option any more, are arctic foxes and red foxes comparable temperament wise to the fennecs? It might be easier to find one of those captive bred. My grandpa had a pet artic fox and it was super sweet.

I'm not too sure on the temperament. I've been researching fennecs since I was about 12 years old when I saw a picture of one, and haven't deviated from that ever since even one iota LOL. I do know of a couple on Flickr that has a fennec and an arctic fox, but they express on their page not to ask them about where to get one, etc, so I'm not sure if I could dig into their minds or not. I am on another forum for exotics and most people there seem to own foxes they buy from fur farms or swap meets, so I'll check there.

I seem to always end up in a place where it's either illegal to own them, or here where it's illegal to import so its hard to breed.

I don't think regular American foxes (grey, red, etc.) are the same in temperment at all as a Fennec fox.

Is there any way you can purchase one out of state? (Is that what you mean by you can't import? Or is that out of country?)

It's out of country that you can't import, but there's only two breeders that I know of in Canada at all. The other was in Alberta I THINK, but at the moment they're only breeding pocket pets like hamsters and such.

I've looked all over but I can't seem to find any other Canadian breeders. From what I've been told by others, it's hard to locate them here.

Oooooh, for some reason when I looked at your location I read it as OK. *needs to get some sleep* Now I can understand why shipping from another state won't work, because you aren't in the US! :)

Are there any local exotic animal expos, or something of the like? That may be your best bet. When I was trying to find my STO I couldn't find any breeders in my area, but it just so happened that at a certain reptile show that hits my state once a month has two different breeders attending so I was able to get one with relative ease once I figured everything out!

I meant the euro reds that come in all different color morphs and are bred by pelters. :)

That sucks they won't allow importation. :( Is there no provision where you can jump through a ton of hoops and get a permit? Sheesh, you'd think they'd allow something.

Maybe another venue to pursue would be zoos? You'd have to approach very carefully and seriously, but it's not uncommon for zoos to liquidate their excess or reject breeding stock in the private sector.

Honestly, the boyfriend and I were talking about it, and really, how hard would a kit be to hide crossing the border in a car LOL.

I'd be too scared to try it though.

Thanks for the advice :D

I remember being at a zoo once and at the fennec habitat, and the wall was only up to my hip. The little fennec was asleep right against the wall, I could have just leaned over and picked him right up! Obviously I wouldn't have but it was a little weird just how accessible he was.

You could dye him black, and then tell people that he is a Chihuahua mix puppy. That might work. ROFL
