question about getting into grooming

atm i work in a boarding kennel and well they're kinda laying me off, so i'm looking for a new job, one im trying is dog grooming and i just want to ask is it hard to do?

we have a groomer where i work atm but hard to ask her coz well i dont want to hint out to my other work that im looking to leave as if they find out they might lay me off completly.. my cousin does grooming and i did ask to see if i can learn from her, but she's just had back surgery.. so yeh

It all depends on how you take care of yourself, the equipment you use, your set up, exercise, nutrition etc. It all comes into play when your doing any physical job.

My Sister has been grooming for 25 years, she has recently cut back to 5 days a week and every second week 4 days. At one time worked 6 and when she worked as a groomer at a boarding kennel 7 days a week and no life.

She does not have any health problems and takes good care of herself. Some will say that giant breeds are hard on you but my Sister loves grooming giant breeds (owns Newfoundland's) and she is actually cutting back on small breeds.

Good handling skills are essential to grooming, using calming techniques will make the grooming process easy on you and the dog. Don't over book yourself and do only what you are comfortable with, a stressed groomer has tense muscles which are easy to injure.

You should talk to your cousin, then look for a good grooming school to attend. Perhaps your cousin when she is up and about can take you on at her shop and teach you further.

thanks for the info.. i'm looking on a job and have printed out a heap of my resume's, so might go out one day and just hand them into random places. there is a course that does grooming, but first its not really near me and is quite alot of money. i'm not sure how long my cousin will be out for..

but theres a dog kennel that i did work experience at once and they do grooming and i rung them before easter asking about a job with them, but coz we were going away i couldn't go over easter, so might ring them back coz her daughter does grooming there and i learnt a bit from them when i done the work experience with them
