Here are the ingredients to the new Purina Beneful Healthy growth formula. I was wondering how EXACTLY you could tell if the food was bad or not? I mean what are some of the ingredients to look for in a dog food that is bad. This is always advertised as having real meat and vegetables (as well as grain and milk). So why do I look at the ingredients and go..."ok, where's the good stuff?" . What in this food's ingredients are bad and what are good. The people behind us feed there puppy this and her coat looks as good as my dogs and her teeth are good lookin too.

Usually the first is the most so you have mostly ground corn.. Yummy!
And really, would you eat chicken by-product meal? I think that is like ground chicken beaks :)

I know exactly what is in chicken by product meal....YUCK!!!!!
I used to work sanitation at a poultry kill plant and all the stuff we cleaned went into a truck to make dog food....the heads and feet (most of them anyways) are sent off someplace else (I don't know for what though) although sometimes head and feet will get in with the rest of the stuff.
All the chicken fat, excess chicken part, the insides, feathers, all the HORRIBLE chemicals we used, latex gloves, hair nets, pieces of plastic, cigerette butts, went into make dog food (they never would tell me which dog food company it went to, that's why I'm super careful what I feed Angel)....the one chemical we used would burn big holes in your skin the second it touched it....and we used a LOT of this chemical....you wouldn't believe how gross all that stuff is....
Sorry just had to add my 2 cents.

Thanks for your input...it does not surprise me one bit. My rule of thumb is if you can buy it at the grocery store...it's crap!!! If you can buy it and Petco or Petsmart...it's usually crap too!! I stick to buying my foods at non-chain pet supply stores and from our dog training school where they only carry Innova, Canidae and Solid Gold. :)

Ok, I see. I was just wondering because my neighbors fed it to their dog before this puppy they have now (the dog died at a very young age). I was just curious how nasty and gross it actually was for your dog. Yeah, I'll stick with Eagle Pack and Innova.

How come I can not find Innova, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, or any of these good foods anywhere???? I have looked and searched, just to see who carries it near me. Nowhere has it.

They aren't sold at petsmart or petco, maybe that's why it's hard to find. I have to drive a pretty far distance to get my dog's food.

Try a feed store. I do most of my pet-related shopping at the local feed store. They've got a lower markup, so everything's cheaper. All the employees know me and my pets by name. And if they don't have something I need, they're happy to look for it. A much better environment all around.

Pro47 try searching at www.naturapet.com for Innova and other products by that company. They have a link that lists all of the stores that carries them. I'm not sure but I think Eagle Pack does too.
