I own 3 Newfoundland dogs, not one of my Newf's can or will swim. Breeders are breeding more for flashy dogs that are going to win in the show ring rather than dogs that can still do their job.
The coat is a lot of care as breeders are breeding them with much too much coat. They are prone to Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, Heart Murmers and many more genetic problems. I spend 1 whole day a week on each of my dogs grooming. Your home will always have tundrals of black coat floating around and drool and slobber marks on your walls, ceiling, fridge, oven. There is a lot of work to a Newfoundland dog.
I have also noticed many Newf's due to a small gene pool are becoming fearful and introverted. You have to be very careful when selecting a Newf and from which kennel. A kennel which home raises the pups and socializes them is a better choice than the big breeders who bred for champion show dogs. I have also met a few Newf's with temperment problems, aloof, offensive etc. So, it's best to meet both the parents of your pup. Of course, this is some thing you should do with any pup of any breed you pick out.

Yes, that is true, you definitely need to be careful when buying a dog from a breeder. Many are byb just trying to make a quick buck, when they should be worried about bettering the breed. Newfie's are supposed to be very well tempered and like water, so Puppy, if you see any different, seriously contemplate the dog you are buying, no matter what breed it is. All dogs have different personalities, but each breed has instincts that should be bred into them just for having a well matched pair anyway.

Puppy, you have to know the breed and read up on the breed so that you know what you are looking for when you go to pick out a pup. It is not an easy job, but it is worth it when you find the right dog for you.

Now I am not saying in all cases, because there are so many great dogs at the pound that are greatful if you save them and would love you as much as any dog you buy.
