I know you dont want to make the current owner mad but GOD, please take that dog. I just hate hearing stories like this, it so sad and I just dont understand why some people treat animals like this, whats the point of having the dog if the owner is going to keep it chained up and not give it proper care and love?

It does make sense to lay low for a bit - you never know when someone like that might react spitefully and pick up the dog when he might have left it if he thought it was an irritation to someone else. Sometimes it's best not to let people know how you feel about situations like this until it's too late for them to do anything about your solution! ;)

Ok, how about this? Take the dog to the shelter yourself and say you found it as a stray. Let them know that if it's not claimed, you will take it. Let this pervert "owner" know (once he realizes the dog's gone) that he should call the shelters. Or, better yet, say you will call for him. If he bites, let him know you located Sparky at a shelter and is he going to claim him. My guess is he wouldn't. Then Sparky could be legally yours! Finders Keepers!

Yeah I'm gunna give it one more day. The dogs not STARVING but he hasn't been by every day to feed it. Tomorrow is the last day. If she's still there tomorrow, I'll bring her a bag of dog food and some fresh water and when we help my m.i.l. clean out her backyard this weekend, she'll come home with us (that will give us enough time to explain the situation to the landlord, who is gone until thursday). If soon to be ex-step father in law objects I'll tell him it was past the time she was considered legally abandoned and that if he wants her back, which I don't think he'd fight for anything BUT spite out of the situation, he can come here himself and pick her up. I know he won't. He wouldn't dare.

  Or, you could just say that you are calling the shelter and tell him you had no success...then go and claim the dog and hide it until the creep is out of the picture

Well, Sparky is still there. He still says he's coming to get her. I offered to take her, told him I'd LOVE to take her, but he wants her and isn't going to give her up. If she is there the next time I am at the house (its an hour away) she will come home with me, though. my mom-in-law says he's been out to feed her about every other day, so at least she's being fed A LITTLE. Keep praying, he hasn't taken her yet!

Hi
I just read this whole thread through for the first time, GO GET THE DOG He isn't feeding her properly and she's being abused. He's not gonna go looking for her if she isn't at the house and the chain happens to be broken............

Just do it when the MIL isn't home so she doesn't know anything about it.

And why do I keep hearing the theme from the Pink Panther in my head???????

I don't undersatnd much of the way the Humane Society works but maybe you could set the dog free, call the Humane Society in your area, tell them she's bothering people, and after a few days go pick her up! By the way, I faintly remember this organiztion called "Get dogs off chains" or something, I'll look it up on google.
P.S.- Summer Magic, now YOU got the Pink Panther theme song in my head!

GO GET THE DOG! NOW! Whoever said animal cruelty and abandonment hit the nail right on the head. Get the dog, take her home and let him come to get her. I wouldn't let him have her. Take some pictures of her while she is chained up...an empty food bowl, an empty water bowl, shit covered living area. It's evidence. Make him take you to court over it. You would win. Call and ask an animal shelter what you can do about the situation and their opinion of whether the dog is being abused/abandoned, if you are afraid of just taking her.
This dogs' life is never going to improve with this guy. You have the chance to give her a few happy years. I say screw the consequences and just do it. Anyone that really loves their pet doesn't leave it unattended for days at a time like that. Makes me wonder why the guy even wants her.

Pam

Good luck no matter what you decide to do.

Poor Sparky!

I do hope something works out for you to take her. I imagine there could be many complications involved in trying to get her, with a divorce situation. She is most likely just "something" he thinks is "his" in the divorce, and has never been the sweet, loving "living" thing she really is, in his eyes anyway!
