Hi everyone, I haven't had to puppy train a dog for 14 years so I feel lost. We adopted a Pitbull puppy 1 month ago. He is 13 weeks old now. He is a great puppy very calm for a puppy. He was born in a foster home for our local Humane society. When old enough he was transferred to the Humane Shelter when old enough. At that point he was kenneled. Due to that I think he has learned to potty on a pad or towel. I out a towel in his kennel during the day for him to pee on when he can't hold it. I do have a sitter that stops by to break up the time so he isn't confined for 8 hrs. He does use the towel at least once during the day when kenneled. At night time he will go to bed about 9ish and sleep until 7 and not once does he wake through the night. Now to my issue. He does not warn me at all that he needs to go out. I find myself taking him out every 15-30 minutes to potty. He does not go to the door nor cry. We can go 3-4 days w/o an accident then BAM, Last night I left him out..about 20 minutes later he walked out of the room and peed. Some say, Well you need to watch more closely. Ok, I will take the blame for that. But then again last night I was standing in the living-room. He was plating with the kittens, went over to the couch and I was talking to him, he peed...right in front of me, no warning. UGH. SO I yelled (to startle him) picked him up and took him outside where he finished peeing. I reward him outside after any kind of potty. I do this before he comes in the house. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I only kennel him during the times we are not home. He is use to being with us so confining him to a room is only going to make him cry. Has anyone had issues like this? Will he eventually start to give a warning? I wanted to try the ringing the bell trick to go out, but we have 2 crazy kittens that would probably annoy me with them.:banana::banana:

The good news is you're doing everything right. The bad news is you're doing everything right. You have a normal 13 week old puppy. I just raised my first puppy after not doing it for abour 10 years. I thought I was failing because it took forever to house break him at a year and a half. Have you thought about tethering him to you? Also if he cries in the crate, try covering it. That can work wonders for a crying puppy. And don't feel guilty for needing to confine him even if he cries. Sometimes you just need to.
Honestly, some dogs just....don't tell you. Or it takes them awhile TO learn to tell you. It sounds like you're off to a great start, so don't give up hope! Some pups take longer to house train than others.
Honestly, Abrams probably never would have given me any kind of warning he had to pee had he not been in a two room apartment. His warning was going to stand by the door and give me "a look". That was it. And it took him forever to even do that. He still doesn't tell me when he has to go out to potty (but he will if he has to poop, or he wants out for another reason...), I just let him outside every so often for him to do his business.
So, in short, keep doing what you're doing. Reward going outside, startle him if he goes indoors, watch him like a hawk (and when you can't watch him, have him in a crate), confine him to the room you are in and don't give him free run of the entire house, and continue to take him outside frequently to avoid accidents.
I had to take Abrams outside every 45-60 minutes until he hit about nine months old, so don't think that taking a pup out every 30 is odd. It really, really isn't.

It took almost a year to potty train my boy Pap doing what you are doing. Papillons are notorious for being difficult to potty train. A litter box is not acceptable for us and a doggie door would not work here. Now he just gives me "the look" and I take him out. He's REALY good now at 1.5 years old.
Our little girl puppy is 6 mod old and learning. At this point, she will stand at the door and whine a bit. If we are not vigilant, we can miss that first warning and she will pee on the floor in short order. She is small and unable to hold it for very long. I sure hope her control improves soon. She was whining and going out to pee several times during the night but we could not keep doing that. Seems to be getting better but we have a long way to go.
