So recently acquired my new dog from owners who could not afford to care for her anymore. she was trained by them to do her business on newspaper. and she does... at least number 1. can't get her to do number 2 on the paper. we've put paper in several places. and she knows where it is as she pees on it. but won't poop on it. i'm at a loss and do not wish to get rid of the dog but I can't have her pooping on rugs.

Hi, how old is your pet??? You have several options, you can purchase a crate and make sure the crate is small enough so that he/she cannot go in there and usually they will not anyway unless they are sick. This is a long and arduous process but it works, I did this with all my dogs and my 9 month old puppy sleeps in her crate at night and when I go away. As soon as I come home, I go to the crate and take her out and when she poops or pee, I reward her. If you google crate training you will see much information about it. Another idea is to not let your animal do ANYTHING in the house and you need to take the dog out every hour on the hour until they poop or pee outside and then reward your animal. This again is very time consuming but I have found if you want your dog to be trained, it requires discipline and diligence. Also, all the my dogs (but my puppy currently) will ring a bell when they want to go out. That is taught by asking them every single time you go out to ring the bell. All my dogs but my puppy caught on quickly. She will go to the door to tell me she has to go out. I have been home with her training her since she was 8 weeks old, she is 9 months old and it seems it took forever. So, its up to you and the effort you want to put in. Be patient, disciplined and offer rewards for good behaviors.
Lol not my current puppy, she doesn’t get the hang of it but all my other dogs picked it up in a couple weeks. Every time i take my puppies out which is every hour on the hour while i am training them, there are bells on the front and back doors and i say “you want to go out”? And then take their paw and hit it. Once they do it themselves, I give them a treat and continue to give them a treat each and every time they ring the bell. Positive reinforcement, consistency, works every time and it is a very useful tool. You never have to wonder if your dog has to go out, they tell you!!!
