Pool? Salt Water or not?

Since we have decided to not build (My MIL is not moving up now, so we are going to do some Reno's to our home)

We are putting in an above ground this year, debating between 24/27 foot and wether to go with Salt Water or not..

If I were putting in a pool, I'd definitely, no question about it...put in a salt water pool. How very exciting!

Family friends have an inground saltwater pool, and I LOVE it! It's great, doesn't burn your eyes or mess up your clothes/suit like chlorine. I don't know much other than I like it. So no info on maintenance or anything, sorry!

Let's just say if the pool at our new house was salt water, I would have been less likely to have spent the last week tearing it out.

But I still may have done it.

Cost is the same for maintenance from what we've researched. Of course instead of chlorine tabs you are buying salt. Especially if you live in a rainy area and don't cover the pool, you'll be doing a lot of balancing. You also have to add much more stabilizer and acid to the water. You still have to shock the pool using granular or liquid chlorine because the super chlorinate setting on the generators does not bring the chlorine level high enough. The pro is softer water.

We have a chlorine pool and have no issues but we have talked about salt water systems a few times.

Also sloshed out water from the pool (if salt water) will leave salt rings, something we had to address with our patio and the dogs in and out all day during summer. We didn't want salt rings on our home floors or our waterfall either so we stuck with chlorine. Another thing to consider, it's easily washed away but a pain still.

Bear in mind corrosivity as well, as both can really tear up materials surrounding the pool if they are incompatible. And pricing out the initial install would be a very good idea.

When pricing the install has always been in the cost, though we have a friend who installs who may do ours for a case of beer and swim rights.. LOL

We have a salt water pool and it's FANTASTIC. My skin and hair feels better after I swim in it, it stays really clean with minimal maintaining, it's awesome!

I have chlorine and have no problems with it, easy to maintain, but I have heard good things about the salt water pools too. I'm still using the old sand filter.

We use salt and I really like it, the dogs do too. There is virtually no maintenance other than cleaning the filter every 3-4 months.

I am pretty well sold on Salt Water... My hair seems to not deal with chlorine well, so I do like the idea of salt water for that as well..
