Pomeranian Cuts

My little guy Gizmo is about a year old and his coat officially is getting pretty wild. He loves being brushed and gets bathed about once every other month. All in all his coat is in really good shape, aside from a few little mats behind his ears and around his collar.

But I think its about time to get him groomed. He loves to play outside and gets dirty pretty easily. The issue is I've heard so many conflicting things about getting Pomeranians groomed. I love his coat, its so pretty and thick - and couldn't stand shaving it down to nothing, but he also gets very hot and ends up laying in the shade, panting and refusing to play. I want him to be cool and happy. I've done some research and I'm considering a longer, scissored teddy bear cut for him, but just don't know.

So suggestions for ways to get him groomed would be amazing. Thanks!

My old pom looked a lot like yours does. She had very long, thick fur but due to the family's ignorance at the time, she rarely got brushed so her coat became unmanageably matted.

My mom would take her in every now and again for a cut, I don't know what it's called but it was kinda cute. It helped with her bing so hot, but I attribute most of that to the fact that she had no mats after being groomed and all the dead hair was out of her coat. It wasn't too short, but short enough I think..

idgo for a deshedding comb first, get ALL the undercoat you can out...
dog fur is a very good insulator against both hot and cold and in many cases simply removing the entire coat makes them even hotter...getting the undercoat out however...that should help with the excess overheating.

if not id go for a hand scissored long teddy cut mabe a little longer skki's picture...you can always go back and get it trimmed shorter after that if you like the look but it wont take forever to grow back out if you dont.

Do either take her in for a bath and a blow dry with the forced air dryer or, as I do, use a self service dog wash. The dryers really get the loose undercoat out. If you really feel he's hot this summer you can shave his abdomen, which would let him feel the cool floor. I have a Chow in Arizona, though, and I've never had to clip any hair.
