Pom barking at night

Hi!
This is my first post. We are new to owning a dog. We recently got a 2-year old Pomerinian named Leo from a friend. I just have a few questions.

We put his little cage kennel in teh garage with his blankies at night and most of the time at the beginning when we put him in there to sleep he's alright, but lately hes been barking into the wee hours of the night for like 2-3 hours! Im thinking does this dog not get tired?? Even at night sometimes when we are about to go to sleep hes laying in the living room obviously tired, so we put him in the kennel and then within 10 minutes hes starts barking and does not cease until maybe early morning. HELP what is wrong? Is this normal? I've read somewhere that poms tend to bark more which he really does.. Any suggestions?

Where did he sleep when he was with your friend? If he's a house dog, and you've suddenly stuffed him into the garage, of course he's going to be upset. Add that to the fact that his entire life has been turned upside down, and you've got to expect him to complain. Dogs get very attached to their owners and don't particularly like a lot of changes (that's one of the things that makes them such accomplished "watchers;" they notice and take exception to things that are different) and it takes some time and a great deal of reassurance to ease the transition.

Is there any particular reason he's been banished to the garage at night? Especially since he's in a kennel?

Hes from a friends friend and apparently he didnt get much attention and was always locked up in his kennel. Someone recommended me to keep him in the kennel when he sleeps so he feels safe? maybe i was misinformed. Before this week he was fine sleeping in there. Do you think we should move him inside the house? ill try to find out where he slept at his previous owners, but im pretty sure it was still in the kennel.

He may very well have slept in the kennel, but inside the house. If he's housebroken and doesn't chew things up, you might just try bringing his kennel inside and leaving it in a quiet corner with the door open so that he can go to it when he wants, but isn't in lock down.

I'm wondering how cold the garage is getting at night? You said he was okay when you first started putting him in the garage... but if your night temps are dropping anything like ours are, he might be cold.. even with the blankies? Or he might just feel "isolated" from his new family being in the garage... even if he does like his crate for the most part?

We have crates for both dogs, and during the day when we are at work, both dogs stay in their own room closed off from the rest of the house with a little 1/2 door. We also lock them in "their room" when we eat dinner... we have company etc. and the room looks "into the kitchen" with an area about 8 x 6 feet. We leave the crates open, even though they do spend probably 90% of the time we are gone sleeping in the crates... but they don't feel "trapped" etc. since they have the choice of being in the crate or not.

Our first dog, Lucy is the only one that has human bed "rights" for now. Holly just turned 7 months old... and when she is in the "human bed" thinks it is her own personal trampoline, or wrestling mat! Lucy still gets sleeping "rights" to the human bed... and Holly sleeps in her open crate, in their special room. From day one... this has worked just fine. Holly is still "in" the house... and when it is bed time she goes to her crate... and that is just fine with her. My hubby gets up most mornings around 5 AM, and lets Holly in to snuggle in the bed with Lucy and I for a few hours... and she loves this treat! Lucy still gets most of the night be herself with the "humans" but is always glad to see Holly in the early AM!

So... just wondering if your problem just might be that he is feeling "shut away" from the family... and putting his crate inside where he feels more safe, comfortable & "connected" to the family might help?

yea he probably feels shut away cuz he really likes to follow us around when he is in the house. recently i brought the kennel back in and leashed him next to his kennel so he can go in whenever he wants (when we go to bed/go out) and he goes in the kennel voluntarily and isnt barking so that seems to be working. We just dont let him run around when we arent around because he tends to pee everywhere which we are still wroking on =) thanks for all the suggestions
