I'm not sure where you live, if its a big city or not but you don't have a Community Health Care Clinic in your area? I think every big city has a couple and whether you can afford or not they set you up so the goverement pays for your treatment and you are able to be seen by a Dr and get your meds etc...

She's in Canada, we don't have those here since doctors are paid by the government health system. The issue is she doesn't have resident status yet, so she can't go to a doctor because they don't take payment.

If you can't get it there is a reason. What is this med? Why would the friend sell it seeing as it makes them out earlier?

Bad all around.

Not really a reason I can't get it, beyond the fact that I'm not covered under this health care, and I cannot afford to see a GP. Health clinics here to not pass out the medication I need for my pain or anxiety.

Generally, I buy valium from a friend. He is prescribed, but only rarely takes it and, since it's valium, is given a lot at a time (this seems to be standard with valium). I use it both for my anxiety/agoraphobia, and my RLS and TMJ disorder. It's the exact drug and dosage the clinic here gave me the one time I could afford to go, before they stopped prescribing benzos at all to anyone (not even residents can be get them anymore, which we found out when my boyfriend went for his own RLS and they told him they could no longer prescribe benzos at walk-in clinics here).
It is also the exact drug and dosage my own GP back home had me on for two years. I lost my health insurance when I turned 21 (I was literally WEEKS away from hitting Obamas new law that had kids covered under parents insurance until 23, I was LIVID).

As far as drugs, I consider myself extremely well-versed. I research everything before I take it, in various ways. I'm always cautious. I don't buy anything, pharmaceutical or otherwise, from shady people. I'm sure many are against drug use of any kind, and that's fine. I use for both medicinal reasons, and because I enjoy it. But, in this case, it is something I need. I can go ages without taking it, so this isn't to feed any sort of addiction. I've never had a habit/addiction to anything in my years of drug use and experimentation. I consider myself extremely responsible.
I don't even carry these things on my person. They are kept hidden in various places in my room (various places because sometimes I'm not home and someone else is, or someone might bring someone over when I'm gone, and I'm not a trusting person).

I had talked to my mom about how cautious I am about these things. She's not a fan of drug use, and even she is impressed with how I handle myself. She's aware all of her kids have dabbled in various things, and while I've been using a larger variety of things, again medicinally and otherwise, I'm the only one that's been responsible throughout, for as long as I've had to use and chosen to use (about, hmmm, 6 years now I think, starting from when my TMJ disorder became a pain issue).

Morally wrong, no.

My sister has given my brother her Lovenox to cut down on costs. And her Coumadin when my brother was out, and even getting an emergency refill was a PITA. That situation doesn't make me cringe.... same drug, coming from a trusted source. And it was something he was supposed to be taking so IMO that's different than taking something without a doctor knowing.

Definitely an area thing, or something. I get medication that is *very* controlled through a clinic. I don't have a family doctor, I just use the clinic for everything, and have no problem getting drugs prescribed from there. I can't buy them there, cause, well, I can't buy any drugs there. They just keep track of what I'm taking when by my health card. (Even then, I can get a prescription no problem, I just wouldn't be able to get it filled if it was too soon)

I wonder what happened here to make them stop passing out certain meds. They have signs in the clinics now that say they will not prescribe opiates or benzos. Those are the two things I need to control my pain and anxiety.

I cannot wait until I am able to have healthcare. The first thing I'm doing is making a doctor's appointment. My jaw is all kinds of messed up lately, and my anxiety is HORRID. This OTC stuff is crap, too.

Well for your jaw you'd go to a dentist... you don't need health care for that, do you? I mean, ohip won't cover the dentist, so I'm not sure if you actually need an ohip to go or not?

For my jaw, I can't see a dentist. I've tried (lots of teeth problems, bad bad flosser, I know I know). It is a medical issue because it's a joint and bone problem. Dentists in Canada and in the US won't touch it. When I had insurance it was covered under medical rather than dental.

Thanks, by the way, for reminding me I need to make a dentist appointment. :(

I've had so many issues with my mouth, ever since I was a little kid. Dentists have always been a bad thing for me. I had to be strapped to the table when I was younger. I usually have to take a valium or two before I go in, even just for a cleaning.

Because of my TMJD, it's also incredibly painful to have to force my mouth open that long. It doesn't open that wide as it is, so they always have trouble and force it wider.
They also talk to me like I'm lying, makes me feel horrid. :\

I can guarentee you a doctor would send you to a dentist. Then the dentist will send you to a dentist that specializes in TMJ. My mom, sister, and a few friends that have varying degree of TMJ have all been sent that way.

I was sent that way then sent to a surgeon, but I refuse to have surgery (my TMJ is FAR too bad for drugs or mouth guards to do anything to help it, and even being sent to a surgeon, I have to be referred by a dentist).

ETA: and it's pretty well people spread throughout Ontario and Canada. I'd be iffy about a dentist that tells you to go to a doctor for TMJ issues, and wouldn't go back to them for basic stuff.

ETA: Speaking of mouth issues, MY GUMS ITCH. I swear, it's worse than your foot itching :rofl1:

It must be different here?

Where I'm from, no dentists will touch my TMJD. Only a specialist or a doctor will help me, because my teeth aren't the issue. The orthodontist, at 15, was the one that first spotted it, and he immediately referred me to a specialist surgeon. I've never heard of being sent to a dentist for it though. The dentists here wouldn't help me with it at all, they said. I asked and they told me they don't deal with that.

I have a list of TMJ specialists in TO though.

Maybe it depends on what sort of TMJD you have. Mine is a misplaced bone issue, which is clearly medical. The fluid is fine, and I THINK the discs are fine, though they are being worn down I'm sure, due to my jaw placement.

The surgery scares me. I fear having half of my face go numb, and the risk is too high for me to be okay with it. But something needs to be done.

I hate the lack of attention this disorder gets, considering how common it is. Not enough is being done to help people with TMJ disorders. I've been keeping up with the studies and statistics for years, and it really does seem like people just don't really think it's that serious. I can't believe that.

BTW, my surgery, in America, is $40,000. I really don't want it done, but if I need it, is that really all covered by healthcare in Canada?

I mean, I don't see how it could be immoral but definitely irresponsible and dangerous. Not to say I would not consider it in certain situations but I would recognize the risk I am taking. It depends totally on the medication and if I need it badly enough to make the risk worth it. I am not gonna sit here and say I have never taken one of a leftover muscle relaxer of my husband's for horrible period cramps. Just depends on the medication.

Yep, anything is covered if it's a necessary medical procedure.
This is so amazing to me.

You can tell I'm American, huh? :rofl1:

Still though, the surgery horrifies me. :(
I've met two other people who had the exact same surgery. BOTH had the half facial numbness. Didn't help my anxiety about it at all.

I don't want to live like this anymore, though. The pain is too much. It's just....I can't even explain it. It's in my neck and shoulders now, too. It worries me, like maybe I've waited too long and should've just done it at 15.

My friend had it done and had no side effects. It's a really simple surgery... they make 2 tiny (hidden) incisions, do everything through there, and then wire your jaw shut for 4 months. That's the part I refuse to do :p

Was hers broken and plated into place again?

I know mine has to be broken, moved to the right and forward, and plated. The wiring freaks me the hell out.
