I usually shoot in S-priority; I need to play more with A-priority I think. I've gotten some interesting shots before, but I'm more comfortable with S. Manual, I haven't bothered with, LOL.

Try aperture priority, once you set to each aperture you'll get a feel for the shutter speed that it's at. It gives you a good play over depth of field.

The higher the f/ number, the more that is in focus but slower the shutter speed. If you want a thin depth-of-field where little is in focus/blurry background go for a low f - number. This one is good for portraiture, also the shutter would be faster. Play with it, you'll get the hang of it. I'm spoiled by it, but I like the full manual modes (especially because I'm not always in love with the D80's metering)
