Pet Insurance

Hi,

i was wondering if i should buy pet insrance for my puppy.

He is a 4 month old Toy Poodle. Should i consider this? What options do i have? I am located in Toronto, ON, CANADA.

Both my dogs have pet insurance, but i got it for them while they were really young, about 4 months. The reason this matters is because if your dog has pre-existing conditions, the insurance company will not want to cover any costs associated with anything that happens in the future. They will try to get out of paying alot of bills based on any "pre-existing" conditions that exist. As far as what they cover and how good they are, it depends on the company. I think we have VPI. There are a few different plans to pick from too.

I did a lot of research on this when I got Charlie. What it came down was I was giving my money to them for a "what if". I decided to create my own peace of mind instead of them banking on my love for my pet.

There where also so many unknowns, a lot of insurance companies did not cover everything, so I was gambling that I was paying for the things that might happen to him, something happens not covered and I would need to pay out of pocket.

Instead of paying them with money that might never be used I have decided to setup a savings account and every pay check automatically get money put into it. This way if he ever need it its there, if not then the money is still mine and not the greedy insurance companies.

There is a service in Canada called medicard that I would also go to for emergencies if it was more than I had in the bank. I am sure there is a similar service in the US.

I decided to get a VPI policy right after I got Smokey. A couple of hours at an Emergency Animal Hospital on two different occasions and I could see that thousand dollar plus bill were fairly common for any kind of injury. My $134 policy has almost payed for itself already and I have 9 months to go before renewal..
