Hi,

We have a French door inside the house (not an external door). We took one pane out so we have a 8x12" opening (small dog!). I'm looking for a pet door that will fit in these exact dimensions. Or maybe just a magnetic flap I can open and close?

Door is thin so I don't think normal pet door would work (if I could find one that exact size)?

Only requirement is that I can close/lock it to keep him from entering through the opening when needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Joe

are you concerned about putting a pet door in for resale value or something? If so, just buy another panel of cheap wood, buy a pet door that does what you want, cut a hole in that panel and mount it like you would any other pet door.

Save the good panel for when you move or want to change it, and put it back in.

I think you'll have better luck cutting a hole to fit your pet door rather than finding a pet door to fit a fixed dimension.

Or you can build one. I think a panel and pre made door would be much easier and look cleaner.

doing something like putting a rabbet joint down the back side of 3/4 inch trim pieces could look nice. Put the trim around the opening (sides and bottom) on the door itself, rabbet out the back a bit with a router or table saw, then buy a piece of 1/4 inch paneling, cut to slide down the back side of the trim on the doors. Then mount the top trim piece to match on that panel and then just manually have it closed, or take it out when you want to use it>

Or you could mount the trim all the way around the door and rabbet out the back and slide the panel in, then you'd have to attach something to stick above the trim just a bit so you could grab and remove it.

Might not have explained the issue well.

We have a French door - a bottom window pane has already been taken out. Size is 8 inch by 12 inch. I can't find a pet door that matches that size.

It's an internal door so don't have to worry about keeping cold air out. Some sort of vinyl flap maybe? Since I need to lock it at night, a magnet or hook and eye lock to keep it closed when I want?

Any other suggestions?
