I checked the website of the wonderful shelter where I got all my dogs and discovered they'd helped with the rescue of 800 parakeets last summer. The birds had two illnesses Avian Gastric Yeast and psittacosis. They were treated (under quarantine, since the psittacosis can be transmitted to humans), and are now nearly ready to go to new homes.

I would like to adopt a couple of birds. I had some as a kid, and they were so beautiful and made nice little pets. Any advice? I'm a bit worried that my house is too drafty to be good for a bird.

Drafty can definately be a problem.
Are there any particular rooms that tend to stay warmer?
Also realize that because these birds are from rescue, chances are they will not be tame, so you'll have to be VERY patient. And geez, those little buggers hurt when they get a hold of ya!
