I read a post about Orijen's new formula that kind of has me a little nervous. Can anyone comment on this?http://cynoanarchist.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/a-look-at-orijen-adult-food-or-why-i-should-stop-making-rules-if-im-just-going-to-break-them/#comment-3112

I just received my third bag of Orijen Adult and I read somewhere else that the new formula was being put on the shelves on November 15 so if that's the case then I think I have a new bag because it does match what's on the website but potato is in it. I thought they were removing potato and replacing it with lentils and chick peas (I can't remember who said that on here but she is a distributor)?

Link won't open on my phone right now so all I'll comment on is if you have a new bag or not.

You don't.

The new formula will roll out sometime in the new year coinciding with a brand new packaging design.

The change is likely a money decision, as potatoes are getting expensive. I don't know what the effects will be, time will tell for that, but it does have some pros for dogs who may have yeast problems or potato allergies.

I don't tend to recommend Orijen as often as I used to, I like the Acana line better. More variety for dogs, better price point and better results. Very few dogs in my area really need a high octane food like that.

^ All of that.

I read the article, and though I'd need to refresh myself on this to be sure, I believe Orijen's calcium and other mineral balances are similar to other foods of similar quality. She's pulling nutritional information from a single source (the National Research Council, even) that may be off-base. Again, I don't know.

Their analysis won't be changing drastically with the exclusion of potatoes and inclusion of lentils/chickpeas... her post is based on the -existing- Orijen formula.

Finn had some dry/dull skin and coat issues after finishing his first bag of the new Acana formula. It was the Grasslands formula, so I may go back to trying the Pacifica. Right now, I have two huge free bags of Oven-Baked grainfree fish that he's doing swimmingly on.

I didn't think they switched to the new formula yet since the potato was still in it but I couldn't recall everything else on the ingredient list. Shippo was on Orijen some time back but I was feeding a lot to him to get his weight up and it made his stools pretty loose so I switched to Acana Wild Prairie and they firmed up again. When I got Gidget in October I switched him back to Orijen Adult because he had slowed down on his eating and switched her over on the same food because there wasn't much difference between the Adult and the Large Breed formulas.

I am debating on switching to Acana though they haven't had any problems so far but it's only been a couple months. Gidget has been growing at a good rate, no sudden growth spurts so far so I'm not sure if I should even do it or not. There doesn't seem to be a significant difference in analysis between the Acana and Orijen formulas I feed and it's a $9 difference so moneywise it's not a big deal... until maybe after I get another dog ;) Where Shippo's concerned (since he has had both formulas), I haven't seen much difference in the way of results, at least so far. Perhaps not enough time has passed by yet.
