Orijen Senior

Anyone ever fed it?

I've gotten a few of the sample 1lb bags of Orijen Senior and fed them to Jackson mixed with his Acana Duck & Pear and his poop looked better to me. Not by a ton... but better, firmer. I've been feeding Acana duck for a while now mixed in with an occasional bag of Purina Beyond.

The Orijen is 38% protein, Acana is 27%. Fat is the same at 15%. Fiber is 8% in Orijen and 6% in Acana.

I looked it up on chewy and it's literally $1 more for the Orijen. ($19.99 and $20.99 for 5lbs). Was going to maybe continue to just mix both, or maybe feed Orijen for a bit, then Acana, etc in a rotation.

Then a part of me wants to say efff it and just feed Purina Beyond or Purina Sensitive Skin & Stomach and save some money. Any time I've fed Beyond he seems to do well on that too lol. Sooo it's mostly just ME that feels better feeding a "better'" food. Like usually when I feed Beyond I will buy the "better" canned food (like Weruva etc) and then when I'm feeding a more expensive kibble I'll just buy the cheap Cesar wet food to mix in. lol. He usually only gets a spoonful in each meal (sometimes it's just dry for one meal, just depends).

He's moderately active. Not as active as he used to be solely because I've gotten lazy with him but he does swim a ton in the summer so the protein in the Orijen shouldn't be a huge deal.

Also he's only 6 1/2 and a small breed so I know he doesn't need a 'senior' food, I'm only feeding because he does better on lower fat. And in the past other orijen formulas he got softer poop on.

If he does well on the Orijen food, then I wouldn't see why you shouldn't feed it. But i wouldn't feed it because you *want* him to do well on it, if you know what I mean.

That being said, I'll say the same about the Purina Beyond and One foods. I really, really like that the Beyond and one formulas are so readily available and inexpensive, while still being feeding trial tested. I've also personally experienced, and seen, very good success with the food. So, if Jackson does well on those...go for it!

Skill came to me on Purina Pro Plan Performance 30/20. I tried switching him, he got sick. And then I realized how cheap it was to feed. And he has the best coat in my house. And now I'm planning on switching Siri to it as well.

If Frodo stops doing well on his current food, my next plan is Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach.

I plan on being crucified when I go back to Chuck and Don's part time for the winter.

I feed both my dogs Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 - love it. Both of my dogs are doing fantastic on. First food I've tried that Abrams didn't have horrible gas on and Cynder has put weight on AND hasn't had a dry coat. Also, small poops for the win.

Lol yes I think we have. I'm kind of tired of the food game and have actually been perfectly content feeding Acana Duck with no problems. Like I said orijen poops were a bit better, but thinking it's the high fiber... no idea if that's good or bad, most foods are in the 2-4% range lol.... *shrugs*

I feel so dirty when buying a bag of Purina though but it seems to work close to the same. Though he hasn't been on it long term enough to tell a difference for sure I don't think.

I'm never fully satisfied with other foods though and always end up back on Acana. I miss their old formulas tho. Hate all the lentils and peas honestly it annoys me. Love Fromm as a company but he's always done crappy on their foods unfortunately.

I now sing the praises of Pro Plan to anyone who will listen. It is the most bizarre thing for me but I can't deny what works...
I also am a fan of saving money.

Not too surprised. Purina would be downgrade from Orijen or Acana. It some cases it may appear to work if the dog gets used to it, but is it good for longterm health? No to sure of it.

Here is an example, where Purina uses corn to boast the protein stats. They use generic ingredients such as "Animal fat" and not so appealing "Animal digest"
