Online classes

I find its a matter of personal preference. I personally dislike online classes and never seem to do as well as when I take them in person. I also find I don't learn as much without discussions and the chance to ask questions as they come.
That said I know people who LOVE online courses.
So maybe try one and see how it goes?

Well, I did probably 1/3-1/2 of my college classes online, so I am pretty familiar with doing things online. So I took Recallers and it was great.
I know many people who have done Sylvia Trkman online classes, including a lot of Recallers people, and they all really love it. I was considering doing one as an auditor and just couldn't swing the money. I did hear from someone who said she audited the class then took it as a participant the second time around. Everybody I know who has been a participant has said she is great with her comments on everybody's videos. I really really REALLY want to do her foundations class with Payton... need moar monies.
Oh yeah, and Greg Derrett has a class or is working on a class. Kinda want to try that out too but I don't know if he has done any in the past, so might be best to wait and see how people like it...

Where do you find out about them? I've taken 21 of my 48 hours of college classes online, and with my area having zero dog training facilities, it might be a worth while investment!

Most of the ones I know of I've just heard highly recommended... I know there are other people who offer some too but mostly I just hear people scoff and roll their eyes about it. Teaching online is a different skill than teaching in person, not everybody is good at it, so I try to poke around and see how other people like it, to see if students feel they're learning something.

I'm in the middle of Silvia Trkman's online puppy tricks class. I love it. She is so quick to respond, very thorough in her responses and very quick to pick up on trouble spots/handling issues. It is not a class for beginning clicker trainers as she doesn't cover the basics, however it is a ton of fun for people who understand clicker training. I plan on taking her foundations class in the future.
Not all online classes are the same however, I have heard bad stories of online trainers being slow to respond, not being very helpful, etc. I will always check with previous online students before shelling out a lot of money on an class.

I just started Silvia Trkman's foundation class, the first online class I have ever taken. Like Sara said, Silvia is really great about watching everyone's videos and answering everyone's questions pretty quickly. The cost for her classes is really reasonable, considering the price of seminars that are just a couple days of explanation/work/help. The Foundation class is 15 weeks of being able to have her watch your videos and offer you help. And if you want to train with her, this is probably the only way you can unless you can go to her place in Solvenia - I think she's done traveling far and wide for seminars.
How it works with the foundation class, you get a new lesson every 2-3 weeks, so it gives you a good bit of time to work on each lesson. In between the lessons, you post videos of your progress and Silvia responds. Other classmates sometimes chime in too, offering what worked for them. There is a lot of ongoing discussion, way more than what you see in most classes or seminars. The lessons are really pretty intensive but are adaptable to all skill levels and she helps people equally regardless of the level they are at with training. Like some people in the class have absolutely no agility experience starting off and some have trialled at high levels for many years and have dogs who already have a lot of skills. So the former might just be working on say teaching Cik/Cap in the first week and the later might be working on tightening up their Cik/Cap in sequences. Quite a few people are repeaters, so I suspect it takes a lot of people more than one session to work through everything, especially if they are starting with a puppy who hasn't been started on anything yet. She does give a really good discount to people repeating or working second dog. I don't know how other classes work but when you audit her's, you get the same info, same lessons, you can ask questions and join in discussions but you don't post video. I know she has different price levels and the less you pay, the less info/instruction/access you get so that could have something to do with the widely differing opinions I've heard. Don't know anything about Greg Derrett's online classes or Daisy Peel's.

I haven't taken any yet, partially because I have very limited access to equipment. I have friends who take classes through Agility University with Tracy Sklenar (http://www.agility-u.com/) and love them. I'm thinking about paying to observe a class or two, and then maybe taking a couple of classes that don't require much equipment. There are several instructors there that I would love to work with, including Tracy who is my favorite person I've done a seminar with by a long shot.
I have taken Recallers with Susan Garrett, only at the cheapest level, so I didn't get to post vids or get feedback, but the wealth of information in the course itself was worth it.
I have also taken 2 different courses through the Agility University (not with Tracy Sklenar), and one of them was the biggest waste of money ever.
In the future I will definitely get feedback on courses before taking them, and I think at this point I'd stick with Silvia.
