Yes, I am.

Once again...the reason I am able to laugh at what happened BECAUSE it turned out ok.
So, you think it's funny that your dog could've broken his leg, but didn't? Hahaha... we're all laughing!!!!

But the thing is, you're not planning to learn from this situation. You still think it's okay to keep him off leash.

What happens next time when he jumps into someone's yard who is less than thrilled?

a 30 pound dog is going to pull her over a fence? seriously? come on.

you're lucky it wasn't my yard your dog jumped into. i would have been less than amused, and downright pissed if my dogs had been outside and had gotten into trouble because you choose not to control your dog. and even moreso if i had been forced to have my dogs killed because they were deemed "Dangerous" when it was all YOUR fault.
Caught off quard a 30 pound dog could easily drag me down. [EDIT]I should have been more clear in my earlier post, I did not mean she would have been dragged over the fence. If I did how would Oakley have been momentarily hanged?[/EDIT]

You are correct on the rest of you point.

My God!
I better not mention that my dog was playing in a puddle earlier, i mean god knows what could've happened- he could've drowned!! :yikes:

C'mon... wise up. Are your dogs stuck in 100%-safe cages all day or something??

Look, there's being careful, and there's being a complete control freak.

Let's all walk our dogs unleashed and see what happens!
well, your dogs would probably run into the street and get hit by cars and die. So that would be pretty foolish.

Now if you train them to be reliable enough off leash FIRST, and live in an area that barely has any traffic, then I would say go for it.

If Oakley was not 100% reliable to NOT cross streets, I wouldnt let him off leash. We've thrown toys into the street...he stops mid chase...sits and waits..without a single command. Food, same thing. He stops mid chase when he is running full speed after bunnies/squirrels without a single command, if they go into the street.

Every SINGLE time we set FOOT in the street he is told it is "okay". If we forget to give him that okay, and we walk into the street, he waits at the curb.

We hold kid's hands while they cross the street so they don't go willy-nilly running around in it. Dogs don't get any smarter than a 3 year old child at best. So unless you're in favor of letting 2 year olds run around with no restraint whatsoever, it's a bad analogy.

I'm glad we have leash laws in my city that most people in my neighborhood follow. There are only two loose dogs that I see with any regularity and both are small and seem to have enough sense to stay far away from me and my dogs. One I know is let out in an unfenced front yard with no supervision (keep in mind, I live in a city, front yards are small and the road is right there), the other I think is more a case of people with an unsecured fence who can't be bothered to fix it. I think the people with the tiiiiny yorkie and the fence with huge, gaping holes moved away. That dog did manage to find its way in to my securely fenced back yard one day (my yard is securely fenced for 55-100 lb. dogs, not 3 lb flullballs that can fit through cracks!).

OMG I'm so overprotective my dogs have no life they're so miserable they live in a sterile box!!!!

Just because he won't run into the road, doesn't mean it is okay to have him off the leash on a walk. There are many other reasons why having him off the leash while on a walk is unsafe.

You said you learned from your mistake, so does that mean you're going to leash him from now on?

I'm glad that the squirrel didn't run across the street that Oakley knows he's not supposed to go into to .
Well uhh, actually the situation would have been better if the squirrel had run into the street, cause then Oakley would have stopped chasing it and never would have ended up in the yard...

But the thing is, you're not planning to learn from this situation. You still think it's okay to keep him off leash.

I didnt learn?? Yeah, okay, thats why I walked like 3 blocks outta my way to avoid that house...

And PUH-lease. Next time he jumps in someone's yard?? When the hell would that happen again??? ESPECIALLY now that we know to avoid high snowdrifts by fences..

SharkBait..my GOD ... ::shudders:: NOT A PUDDLE!!! Not only could he have drowned, but he also could have drank some water that had a horrible waterborne illness like giardia, and DIED.

It's not a funny story at all. It's a disaster averted.

If Oakley had dropped into MY yard, he'd have been torn apart by Ronin... funny, eh?

Yeah, probably not.

I'm really curious as to how you think this could never happen again. It happened today, didn't it?

So you avoided that house on the walk back... wow, that makes it all the more responsible  What makes you think that he wouldn't go into another yard?

OMG! I didn't even think of that! :yikes: I am just SO irresponsible- shame on me! I'll just have to carry Matisse around in a handbag from now on... it's the only safe thing to do.... (or perhaps not take him out at all, you never know- a meteor could fall on us!)

Um. I don't generally let the dogs drink out of standing water (fresh running water when we're on a hike is okay). It's not like giardia and leptospirosis are myths that paranoids just made up to scare you. They do exist.
