I'm sorry to keep you guys wondering....

Last Wednesday morning Nomi got out of her crate acting normal, but walking a bit stiff. She was fine when she went to bed, so we thought maybe she slept wrong. I started her on Traumeel, limited her activity and watched her like a hawk. Thursday was the same way but she seemed to be moving in the right direction, as she didn't seem as stiff. Friday she seemed even better, but still wasn't 100% normal. We continued to monitor her and limit her activity, but late Friday she started walking really stiff and if you touched her side, just above her hips she would let you know it was tender, this was the first time she had shown any response to pain.

We were waiting in the parking lot when our vet opened on Saturday morning. I still felt like she had pulled a muscle, but wanted to be sure. The vet checked her over, and didn't get any pain response from her back, but did from the area above her hips on her side. She also checked her for neurological signs and Nomi responded as she should. So, she said she felt she probably over did it playing and pulled something. She ordered her on strict crate rest, gave some pain medicine along with a muscle relaxer. We also opted to put her on a steroid in case it was her back, because the quicker you start treatment the better the recovery.

We did this from Saturday until this morning, with her showing improvement. For the first time yesterday she greeted me when I got home from work with her normal happy tail wag. JR let all the dogs out this morning to go potty and when he went to sit her down in the grass to go potty he noticed she had no use of her back legs. We called the vet and she asked us to come in right away.

When we arrived and after the vet had examined Nomi you could tell it wasn't good. Nomi is responding to deep pain, but she can't respond to it very well and one side seems worse than the other. Our vet feels that she has either slipped a disc (or had a disc rupture) or that she has had a spinal cord embolism (FCE).

If it is a FCE there isn't anything that can be done, and she can continue to get worse. If it is a slipped disc, it can be operated on, but the outcome of the surgery for IVDD is all over the place. Some dogs have great recovery, some end up living in a cart, and some it doesn't help or makes them worse and they end up having to be PTS.

We have started acupuncture, ion baths, and medicine for the time being. We have a very well known surgeon in our area, but the office was closed today, but I will contact them first thing in the morning.

Nomi is only 5 years old, and has been healthy her entire life, except for a few minor things (URI, stomach bug, etc). I simply can't wrap my mind around how she can go to bed normal and wake up like this. I know it happens, but it isn't supposed to happen to my dog.

If it turns out that the we (us and the surgeon) don't feel surgery is best for her and she shows no improvement we will make the heart wrenching decision to help her to the rainbow bridge. I know that there are things to help paralyzed dogs, but Nomi isn't a dog that could be happy in a cart. She looks to us to do what is best for her and that is what we will do, no matter how much pain it causes me.

If you could please continue to send vibes our way we would greatly appreciate it.

I'm so sorry, but I am also remembering the little dachshund on here (Dena's, I think, and his name was Jackson) who went through something similar and made a full recovery even after the vet said it didn't look good.

I'll be keeping her in my thoughts

We are trying to stay positive, but as someone who has had Dachshunds her entire life, I've seen both sides. Charlie went through something similar in March of last year, and has made a complete recovery. I pray the same thing happens for Nomi, but she is much worse than he was, but that doesn't mean she won't recover it just may not be to 100%, and I'm okay with that.
