New to Chazhound with new puppies

Hi - I'm new to this site.
My husband and I rescued 1 old english sheepdog/terrier mix from a shelter of all strays in late September. She was underweight so no one knew she was PREGNANT!!! Yesterday (Oct. 29) she had 5 healthy pups (her complete litter) - even though she had undergone anesthesia for a spaying that never took place.

I'm joining now because I'd love to find out what these pups daddy might be. Mommy was running the streets of Watertown, NY months before we got her. The pups were over 16 oz at birth (that was as high as my scale goes and they were well over it) and 3 look just like mama (white and black with lots of unique markings) and 2 are all white - one of the white ones is the largest of the litter - probably 1 1/2 times the size of the others. They were all white with pink noses and ears and the noses are turning black already.

Can anyone help identify what their daddy might be? Oh, mama's about 40 pounds not pregnant (she got up to 48.5)...the vets said her puppies were gigantic before they were born.

Why did she undergo anesthesia for a spaying that didn't take place??

Did they suddenly realize she was pregnant right before the surgery? That seems odd. Or did they just deliver the pups surgically?

Anyway, I hope the pups are healthy and thriving.

There really is no way we can guess at the "sire" of the litter. Just be thankful they are healthy and happy.

If you post some pics, maybe we can guess. But in reality you will never know.

Thank you Julie! The vet did a "complete" pre-surgery blood work-up - but apparently that doesn't include a pregnancy test. She's under a year herself so they just assumed it wasn't likely. They gave her anesthesia and cut her open - they were proceeding with the surgery when they saw the pups. They called and asked if I wanted to abort and finish the spay - but I said no. They closed her back up and we've just been waiting to see if everything would be ok (so far, so good).

Family/friends who have seen the pups speculate a yellow lab (but I know that's what they want to think, too).

I couldn't get any pics to load - I kept getting an error - any suggestions? (is there a size limit?)

Wow that sounds risky. How far along was she when they tried to spay her?

What breed of dog is she? (or does she appear to be?) It will be easier to find out about the pups as they grow older. When they are young they alll look... like puppies! lol

The easiest way to post a picture is the following:

Join http://www.photobucket.com .

Upload your pictures to that site, which is just a picture hosting site.
You can make them smaller by clicking edit under the thumbnail after you have them uploaded. They use percentages 75, 50, 25 percents of the original picture. (This is not really as complicated as I make it seem).

Then copy the 3rd url looking address below your picture.

Then (after you copy it from photobucket) just click "paste" here at chaz where you type your messages, (you know after you hit reply)

If you click preview post right under where you type you should be able to see the picture, and then you know that we can see it too.

Don't forget to click Submit Reply, so your message will be posted.

Thanks for your help Julie! Here are the pups at 3 days.

Also at 3 days - this is their mama, Crayons. She is a 9 mo old Old English Sheepdog/Terrier mix. Any idea how soon you can give mama a bath after birth? She's still bleeding a little.

it's quite possible lab because lots of mixed breed dogs have lab in them. They are so cute though, momma too. one of them almost has the border collie coloring though. I don't know I'm really no expert on deciphering mix puppy breeds. They are SO cute though. Any idea how you are going to find homes for them all??? Try and purchase the book "How to Raise A Puppy You Can Live With". They sell them on Amazon.com for like ten bucks (including shipping) used. It will tell you how to properly socialize the little pups before they go to their new homes.

And here are the puppies today (at 4 days old). One of the white ones is a giant and all the rest are around the same size - is it normal to have a giant instead of a runt? We do!

We have about a dozen people who want them...3 we're sure are good homes. I told them all to wait until we know a little more about the pups...we're keeping one too.

All puppies look the same to me at this age, maybe when they are a few months older than we'd be able to get a better guess at what they are. I think it's possible to have a bigger than average pup out of the litter. Does he seem normal, eating and movement wise? Have the pups been to a vet yet? Also all the pups could all have different fathers (or atleast some). It is possible for the mother to be bred by different males in one heat cycle.

The vet didn't want to see them for another week (I assume he wants to wait until they can take the chill in the air). I had heard they could have multiple dads - but never thought about it here! She was a stray so it's totally possible.

The big pup eats a little more, but other than that seems normal.

Here are some pics that I just took...mama doesn't like them to be disturbed...so I probably won't get close-ups for a few more days.

You'll see a toy in the pics because mama keeps dragging it in with the pups! She didn't care for the toy at all before she went into labor.

the black and white ones definetely have a border collie look to them, IMO. The other two could possibly turn more yellow with age though, or stay white. I think they just may be some classic heinz 57 pups there. Still cute though, regardless.

that coloring could also indicate pitbull too. I've seen some beautiful pits with that same coloring. but you are right they are so cute... but when are puppies every ugly?
