new puppy help please!

hi everyone. i found this site and it has helped me so much, but i have a question. Do I put a bed in the crate with the puppy or just a blanket? I took if for granted that it needed a bed in their for comfort but i have read that it makes the puppy more comfortable for the puppy to use the restroom in the crate. I appreciate your help and any other information or tips you can on puppies would be greatly appreciated. I have moved out on my own and have never have had a puppy before.

I don't think what you put in for bedding really makes a difference.

I've heard that the crate should be big enough for the dog to turn around and lay down in. If it's much bigger than that, the pup is more likely to go to the bathroom in the crate. (Since they don't want to potty in their personal space, crate should only be big enough for bedding but no toilet area).

How old is the puppy?

How long have you had it?

Where did you acquire it?

i will have her in two weeks and she will be 8 weeks and three days old. she is coming from a breeder. I have checked their references and talked to people that have gotten puppies from them in the past.

find out what the breeder does with the pups. When pups leave here they are already sleeping in crates with blankets or thin beds. They know not to go in their crates.

The breeder does not sound too great considering the puppy came so early, they should not leave the breeder earlier than 8 weeks (sorry I can't help myself, i had to comment). As for the bedding it depends on the dog. Some dogs when given too much bedding are more likely to go to the bathroom in the crate, for others that does not happen. So do what you'd like but make sure whatever you choose does not take up too much room in the crate (too fluffy or poofy) and that the dog does not destroy it.

I agree, the biggest problem with beds and puppies is that they will probably chew it up. This can be dangerous if they swallow it. It's true that your puppy does not need a bed for comfort, but if you really want to you can put one in for a few days and watch it carefully to see if your puppy is chewing or peeing on it. One note - you probably won't be able to see/feel the pee, you'll have to take the bed out and examine it closely or even smell it if it's been peed on.

By the time she gets the puppy, the puppy will be 8 weeks and 3 days .
