Hello everyone, I decided to join upon doing a google search and coming across this message board. I own a 5 month old Hungarian Vizsla pup named Riley. He is registered as Hank, but we bought him from his owners at 2 1/2 months - 3 months old and my husband had heard that it is better to have a 2 syllable name to help with training and having him distinguish between his commands and his name. My kids settled on Riley, and he took right to it.

I have a 7 year old boy, 5 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. Riley was a present for my 2 year old's birthday, but my husband also wishes to teach him how to hunt with him. Mainly duck, but maybe some upland birds such as pheasants as well.

My main concern is that this is my first dog I have ever owned (we had dogs growing up on the farm but they were my dad's German Shepherds). My husband's brother has a 8-9 year old Hungarian Vizsla female, who is wonderful with our kids and a huge reason why my husband chose this particular breed. I should have been researching and doing more to learn about Vizsla's 2 months ago. We are experiencing some problems that could have easily been corrected had I known earlier, but are probably still correctable. I wish to connect with other Vizsla owners and learn from their experiences with the breed.

I am an extreme newbie, so I will probably ask really dumb, easily answered questions, but I do quest for knowledge and think that I learn quickly. I have heard that there are no bad dogs, just bad owners and I don't want to be a bad owner!

His former owners had to get rid of him due to her extreme allergies to him. They tried everything they could to minimize it and ended up having to give him up. The man cried when we came and got him, so we know our main concerns with taking over a dog from someone weren't warranted, and that they were telling the truth about the reasons why he had to go. They only had him for 1 month. He has adapted well to our family, however we are having some issues that I believe can be adjusted now that I am being proactive and seeking knowledge on how Hungarian Vizsla's are natured, and learning things from others.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Chazhound! You sound like a great member and very willing to learn, and we are, of course, very willing to help. beginner questions are fine and not dumb, in fact I like to answer them because they can be such a great help to the first time owner. I look forward to hearing more about you and your dog, I'd love to see pictures of him. I hope you enjoy the forum :D
